Coastal Farmhouse Decor on a Budget

Remodeling the beach cottage has been such a challenge, but it is totally worth the effort. However, searching for those treasures to decorate with has been a pleasure.

Y’all know I love my Thrifting with the Gals, and today, as part of our monthly Blog Hop, I’m sharing a recap of all the things I found out about thrifting and how I’m using them in the beach cottage.

Thrifting with the Gals

My post today is part of our monthly Thrifting with the Gals blog hop. Each month we all share vintage and thrift store ideas with you.

Each month, I am joined by my co-hosts, Ann fromย Dabbling and Decorating,ย Kristin fromย White Arrows Home,ย and Robyn fromย Robynโ€™s French Nest. We all live in different parts of the country but have connected through our love of vintage decor.

We are so happy to welcome our guest blogger this month, Jessica from The Old Barn Company. If you are joining me from Jessica, Iโ€™m so glad you stopped by. Can you believe those amazing vintage finds she shared?

Farmhouse Coastal Decor – Bedroom

As I shared in the 7 Creative Small Bedroom Ideas post, we had to get creative with our storage solutions in the tiny bedroom. In addition, there is very little room to display farmhouse coastal decor.

However, I did find this great coastal print and faux driftwood at a resale consignment shop, Home Again, in Wilmington, NC. Adding the thrifted items, along with some shells and a fishing net, to a long, shallow dough bowl was the perfect touch for the limited space.

Although these items were not thrifted recently, I added a little paint to make them work in the newly remodeled cottage. Using a dry brush technique, added just the right amount of white to the basket, which hides that ugly heat and air duct. You can clickย here for How to Hide Ugly Eyesores in Your Home.

The trio of wooden fish was brightly colored, so they didn’t work with the new colors. Craft paint with a touch of metallic gold helped them fit right in.

Two Unique DIY Projects For A High-End Beach Cottage Style

After updating the decor, it was time to update the storage cabinets and lighting in the bedroom. As I searched for new lighting, it became apparent that my taste and budget didn’t match. So I decided to create the look I wanted with an easy DIY Air-dry Clay Flower Wall Sconce and saved more than $800 to get the designer look. The sconces have now been in the cottage for over two years and still look just perfect.

Next, we wanted to update the storage cabinets beside the bed. We considered ripping them out and building something custom for the space. But once again, with budget limitations, another solution was needed. I’m so glad we decided on the DIY Rattan Cane Upgrade: Coastal Chic Cheap Cabinet Makeover.

Thrifted Metals – Beach Cottage Kitchen

Once the beach cottage kitchen was remodeled, all the upper cabinets were eliminated, and I knew that we needed a statement piece for the area over the stove.

In January, I shared What to Look for in Thrift Stores This Year, and vintage copper and brass were both on the must-have list.

It began when I found the copper lobster mold for a steal at a Christian Outreach thrift store. I began my search for copper utensils and decided to look online.

I found this vintage copper-and-brass utensil set on eBay and love, love it! The scoops are an Etsy find, and the brass S-hooks are available here. Although they are new items, they work perfectly with the vintage items.

Next, on another Thrifting with the Gals trip, I found this cute little copper fish mold, and although it wasn’t a steal, I knew it would find its way to the beach cottage kitchen.

The brass shell sconces were another find from the Christian Outreach thrift store. They cost only $4.00 each and are perfect next to the copper and brass pieces in the kitchen.

I previously shared this Shaker Peg Rail with a Shelf, which was a thrift store flip. It adds storage in the cottage kitchen.

You can see many thrifted coastal farmhouse decor items displayed here.

The blue splatterware dish, the wooden utensils, the copper molds, and the larger wood cutting board are all thrifted.

I just shared on Dirt Road Adventures about finding the cutting board on our last trip to Habitat ReStore in Wilmington.

The DIY Accent Wall was constructed using the peg-rail shelf, a $7.00 thrift-store find. If you missed how we repurposed the shelf to make the accent wall.

To decorate the accent wall and storage bench, I once again went thrifting.

Another item that’s always on my thrifting list is handcrafted baskets, so I couldn’t resist this cute wall basket, although the color wasn’t exactly what I wanted.

The color was an easy fix with a little coffee water, which easily stained the natural reed basket.

I recently shared a tutorial on how to make a rope nautical mirror. The budget-friendly DIY project uses 3 thrift store items.

Thrift Store Console Table

You might remember when I shared about finding and stripping this console table on Dirt Road Adventures.

It was a “JOB”, but I love the look. I’m so excited that we were able to reuse a fine piece of solid wood furniture for our beach cottage. While refinishing the console, we found documentation showing that it was made in the USA by Bassett Furniture.

Looking for great-quality wooden pieces is such a money-saver. When you purchase new furniture, you don’t usually find the quality of a piece like this one.

The Best Farmhouse Coastal Decor Find

When you remodel a beach cottage, one thing leads to another, and suddenly, you feel you need to change (almost) everything. So, Brad and I began the search for a new coffee table to give the beach cottage a Farmhouse Coastal feel.

We were so fortunate to find this French Champagne Crate for a steal at the Ivey Cottage in Wilmington. It was in great shape and sturdy enough to make a coffee table.

After a trip to one of our favorite spots, Legacy Architectural Salvage, we found some reclaimed wood to make a top for the crate.

Now we have not only a unique coffee table but also much-needed storage. You can see more about this project here.
