Is Painted Furniture Still In Style? – Trending for 2026
Y’all know that I’m a fan of painted furniture. I’ve transformed many thrift store finds with a few swipes of chalk paint. But is painted furniture still in style for the coming years? The answer is yes! However, as with most decorating trends, there are a few changes that can give your painted pieces a modern and up-to-the-minute decor style. Let’s explore the latest in painted furniture for your home.

Why is Painted Furniture Still Relevant?
Some form of painted furniture is always relevant. It adds a warm, cozy feel to any style home. Sustainable home decor is very relevant, and many homeowners are scouring thrift stores for budget-friendly pieces to fill their homes. The option to paint these treasured finds allows for a personalized home style.
Pieces that would ordinarily not work within your home’s style can be customized and transformed with inexpensive paint.
Finally, the satisfaction of creating a unique piece adds value and truly makes your home special.

What’s New In Painted Furniture? Trending Colors!
One of the biggest shifts in painted furniture is the change in color choices. We are seeing more moody and warm colors. Stark white and shabby chic finishes have been replaced with earthy, muted hues inspired by nature. And warm neutrals that are great for creating a calm, modern farmhouse aesthetic.
Trending Painted Furniture: Moody Warm Colors
- Deep forest green
- Navy Blue
- Smoky Greys and Blacks

Earthy Muted Hues That Are On Trend
- Terracotta
- Muted rusts
- Soft sage greens
- Dusty blues

Warm Neutral Painted Furniture Colors
- Off-whites
- Beiges
- Taupes

On Trend Modern Furniture Details
We are seeing more smooth matte-painted furniture finishes. Embrace minimal distressing to achieve this chic, trending style.
Enhanced Architectural Details
Look for pieces with great architectural details and enhance the designs to give your home decor that little something extra. Add gold leaf or bronze to highlight often overlooked details.

Color Block or Two-Tone Furniture Finishes
A recent trend is stripping furniture to its base color or bleaching natural wood. This trend continues by combining this technique with paint. The old dresser is now used as our entry table. The top and bottom drawers were stripped while the rest of the piece was painted with Old White Chalk Paint. The original hardware was polished and reused.

Hardware Choices For Painted Furniture
There are numerous options, ranging from simple wooden knobs to ornate vintage hardware. However, when choosing your hardware, let the furniture design help to influence your decision. If you are lucky enough to find pieces with the original hardware, I say use it. Period pieces will shine with their jewelry in place.
If you are looking to transform a piece completely, you can choose vintage hardware that works with your design. This plan thrift store chest was completely transformed in this Amazing Furniture Transformation Before & After.

Insider Tip
Don’t disregard furniture hardware that is is tarnished, rusted, or isn’t the right color. You can easily bring new life to old hardware with spray paint designed for metals. I’ve painted many hardware pieces with success. However, before you paint, ensure that your tarnished hardware can’t be cleaned and polish to bring back it’s original shine. Use brass and silver cleaners to test pieces before painting. I love seeing the original brass brought back to life.
What About Chippy Distressed Painted Furniture?
A well-loved and used piece of furniture will always steal my heart, and if the price is right, it will find a place in my home. Authentic chippy paint is hard to duplicate, and if you love a rustic farmhouse or cozy cottage style, I’m sure you will want to add some of those time-worn pieces. In my opinion, they will always be in style.
Although my last two homes were very different in style, I found a spot for my cherished chippy church pew in both.

How To Style Your Painted Furniture
If you have a more traditional or modern-style home, consider adopting a minimalist approach to styling your painted pieces. Allow the furniture to shine with just a few well-chosen accent pieces.

As you probably know, I’m all about eclectic decor. I’ve longed to embrace a minimalist style, but it never works for me. In fact, I’m itching to add something to the above sideboard. Maybe a bowl of fruit or some ornaments on the tree. I’d have to fill-her-up! LOL.
I love mixing and matching styles and trends. One of my favorites is mixing painted furniture with natural wood pieces. Woods and whites have captured my attention for many years. It’s a warm and cozy vibe that never goes out of style.

In Conclusion
So to summarize, painted furniture is here to stay. You can easily update your pieces with trending color choices and styling ideas. However, keep in mind that trends come and go, so don’t feel you need to update constantly.
If I run across a great thrift store find, I may consider a moody hue of paint instead of my traditional white. I’ll also take a closer look at the architectural details and the hardware. I often need a change, but overall, I love my rustic farmhouse style.
When we updated our beach cottage, I updated the furniture in hues of black and grey. The new colors complement the coastal decor and allow me to try the latest color trends.

While creating the home of your dreams, don’t worry so much about the trends, but instead focus on what makes you happy. If you love it, it’s perfect for your home.

Rachel, I don’t know how I missed reading your post. I enjoyed reading it and seeing all the lovely pictures of your beautiful home. You have done such a wonderful job with all your decor. You are so gifted and make everything you do look so adorable! I love painted furniture and have a few pieces. I had to laugh when I read your comment about being a “minimalist”! I always say that I am a “maxamalist”! There’s always room for one more item whether it be thrifted or other. When we go to our favorite thrift store, they have a room filled with antiques. Well, I always find something that just has to come home with me. My dear hubby will often ask me if I really need that and where am I going to put it! Somehow, there is always a spot that needs the item(s)! Praying that your day will go well for you, Rachel.
