old TV cabinet repurposed for jewelry and lingerie

We originally invested in a gorgeous, solid cherry TV cabinet back in the day of small TVs. Itโ€™s such a beautiful piece of furniture that I couldn’t bear to part with it when we downsizedโ€”even though I knew it would never hold a TV again. Instead of letting it gather dust, I decided to give it a new life. So, hereโ€™s how I transformed this outdated armoire into chic storage.

Repurposed TV Cabinet Gets A New Life

When we built the farmhouse, we downsized and sold many pieces of furniture; however, the solid cherry TV cabinet was such a stunning piece, and I couldn’t just give it away at a yard sale. So we stored it, and once the house was finished, I decided to use it in our primary bathroom. Originally, I planned to store bath towels and linens, but at the last minute decided to make it a jewelry and lingerie cabinet. Let me show how easy it was.

Repurpose a TV Cabinet as a Jewelry Cabinet and/or Lingerie Cabinet

One of the first things I did was add shelving to the TV area.

Our cabinet had slides built into the side, allowing the doors to recess back into the cabinet while watching TV. Those worked perfectly as brackets for adding two shelves.

Add shelving and jewelry organizers to make the repurposed TV Cabinet work for lingerie storage. Cabinet transformation.

Fortunately, the cabinet has built-in drawers and shelving at the bottom. However, additional shelving may be needed at the bottom of some cabinets.

How To Add Shelving To A TV Cabinet

If you don’t have built-in brackets, you can easily add a 2 x 2 board to each side of your cabinet for the shelves to rest upon. Just measure the depth of your cabinet and cut your boards to fit.

Attach from the inside, ensuring they are at the same height and level. Use screws to attach. Caution: Ensure your screws are the correct length. They should be long enough to be secure, but not so long that they extend through the cabinet’s exterior.

Then cut the shelving boards to fit the 2×2 brackets. You can customize the depth of your boards to meet your needs. I used a single board at the top and two boards for the lower shelf.

Another caution: Finish your shelving boards with paint or sealer to provide a smooth surface. This is especially important if you are storing delicate undies. A raw board may have splinters that could snag and damage your delicate lingerie.

Add Jewelry Storage For Jewelry Cabinet

I previously had a large jewelry collection, but I only have a few select pieces I wear regularly. I have several pieces I prefer to keep for special occasions. I store those pieces in a small jewelry box with drawers inside the jewelry cabinet.

In addition, I utilize the jewelry cabinet doors as hangers for my regularly used jewelry. This keeps those pieces easily accessible when getting dressed.

I like this inexpensive, stackable drawer for my special-occasion jewelry.

I used two wall-mounted racks to organize my accessories. The one above holds earrings, rings, and bracelets for easy access; a similar jewelry organizer is available.

Handbag Storage in Jewelry Cabinet

The Jewelry Cabinet also has room for all my handbags and totes. I keep special occasion bags in a tote box. However, I like to have my everyday items at my fingertips.

I used the smaller upper shelf for smaller bags and added a simple, inexpensive book holder to keep them in place. I recently added this handbag organizer to give my look a more professional feel.

The dividers are easy to adjust to work with different size handbags.

Another tip to keep handbags stored neatly is to wrap the handle around the bag to secure it.

Lingerie Cabinet Essentials

Another great use of the repurposed TV cabinet is to store lingerie, leggings, camisoles, pajamas, socks, and loungewear. The three small drawers are perfect for small items, and the shelving is great for t-shirts, leggings, camisoles, etc.

If your cabinet doesn’t have drawers, you can easily add baskets or storage containers to hold your delicate lingerie.

I decided to leave the original back on my cabinet. It has cord access; you can see the three horizontal holes in the back. You may prefer to replace your backing with a single sheet of lightweight plywood.

Or you can just cover the back with a convenient mirror. This thrift-store mirror brightens the cabinet interior and lets me check my hair or accessories before heading out the door.

I keep the travel jewelry box filled with my most often used fine jewelry. It is easy to access the pieces in the clear pouches and is ready to pick up and pack at a moments notice. A folding lingerie bin helps to keep lingerie and pj’s organized as well.

The jewelry and/or lingerie cabinet are conveniently located in our master bathroom. It is beside the laundry and across from the master closet, which makes getting dressed a simple process.

In addition, storing freshly laundered items back where they belong is only a step away.

When I planned my master bathroom, the TV Cabinet was factored into the design.

At first, I thought it would be a linen cabinet, but once in the farmhouse, I decided it needed a particular purpose, and it worked great for all my special items.
