How To Add Exterior Lighting For The Holidays & Beyond

Do you ever feel like Clark Griswold when setting up your exterior lights for the holidays? We spend hours decorating our homes for the holidays and we want our homes to reflect the season both day and night. Using exterior lighting to showcase your home for the holidays is much easier than you think.

Now is a great time to add exterior lighting with these exterior Christmas lighting ideas. I’m sharing how you can add low voltage exterior lights to showcase your home for the holidays and beyond, without looking like Clark Griswold.

You will also see how my friend Kim at Shiplap and Shells added the same lights to her garden walkways and a discount code for the holidays.

Previous Exterior Lighting Experience

Previously, we would stretch extension cords all over our yard to light the house up for Christmas. Every year my husband would do his interpretation of Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation.

Okay, he didn’t climb on the house to add hundreds of lights but he did once fall off a ladder while trying to string lights from a tree. True story.

Exterior Lighting Ideas

Last spring, we added landscape lighting from AQ Lighting, around our pool area and sidewalk.

This post is sponsored by AQ Lighting but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

We fell in love with the warm glow these low voltage exterior lights cast around the area and how much safer it was to navigate around the pool after dark. You can see when we added the original lights for our summer picnic here.

Plus, we were able to control exactly when the lights came on and for how long. Perfect when you are entertaining late at night. Our previous solar lights would always shut down before our guest left, leaving the landscape dark and unsafe.

In addition, solar lights added a glow but never really increased the safety factor.

Exterior Christmas Lighting Ideas – The Light Bulb Moment

We started pulling out all our Christmas decorations and my husband said “as soon as I get all the leaves up, I’ll start lighting up the house”.

Then I had that light bulb moment! No pun intended!

That moment when you wonder why it took you so long to think of that idea!

We could add onto our existing system with landscape and spot lights surrounding the farmhouse for the holidays.

No more drop cords spread across the yard and this year our home would have that same warm glow we love around our pool area.

My husband wouldn’t have to do his Clark Griswold imitation this year.

Just add on

One reason we love AQ Lighting is because you can begin adding landscape and exterior lights to your property as your budget allows.

We began with a few lights in the spring and then added more in the fall. I shared this post – How to Easily Install Low Voltage Landscape Lighting. You can see how easy it is to install and add on to your exterior lights here.

We were excited that we could once again add additional lights to our existing landscape system for Christmas.

I was amazed at how well lit the porch looks with just the new landscape lights.

The spot lights will cast a light toward the farmhouse and add a warm glow to enhance the Christmas lights.

Raw copper spot lights directed at the farmhouse creates great exterior Christmas Lighting.

Now all of our lights are controlled by one transformer and are programed to come on and go off at the same time. We no longer have to run around, at dusk, plugging in the drop cords. LOL

Low Voltage Landscape Lighting Year Round

We love to entertain and we added the new lights to showcase our home for our annual Christmas Party and family gatherings.

The new lighting assures that our guests will feel safe as they navigate our steps and walkways.

Even without the porch lights on, notice how the landscape lights provide enough light for the whole area.

In addition, these new exterior lights will continue to provide this level of safety and beauty all year long.

Beautiful Copper

The raw copper really enhances the natural colors in our rock walkway by day and by night.

Christmas at the Ponds Farmhouse

My favorite time of day is when the lights start to come on around the property. Now we have complete control with an easily programed transformer from AQ Lighting.

With the Christmas trees and porch lights glowing, we are ready to greet our guest as they arrive. Every detail of our porch is enhanced by the new lighting.

Something for Everyone

I have been so happy with my landscape lighting, I shared my experience with my friend Kim at Shiplap and Shells.

Kim and I have been friends since we first met approx. 2 years on Instagram. We are in constant touch with each other although we live across the country from one another.

I have learned so much from Kim about gardening and I’d love to one day have a garden that is as amazing as this one. You have to check out her blog.

Kim decided to try the same lighting for her cottage style gardens, located on the Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest.

Although her setting is completely different from mine, these same lights look great along the walkway to her beautiful greenhouse.

Be sure to hop over here to see more of her beautiful gardens and how she easily installed her new lights.

In addition to landscape lighting, AQ Lighting offers many other lighting options for your interior or exterior needs.

I can't tell you how happy I am that I saw your copper lights. I fell in love and am so excited to have my very own pathway lighting. I'm so happy we were able to get lighting for the holiday season.

Thank you for this post...I intend to try this as I like this idea for year round lighting. And I love your home and all you have done there...I wish I had that screened in porch and of course the front porch. Great job.

Blessing to you and yours.
