Why Embrace Cozy Blue Living Room Decor?

As I’ve been decorating the farmhouse for winter, I’ve also been looking forward to Spring decorating. As a result, I’ve been exploring all the home decor magazines, and one color seems to resonate across the board. All shades of blue are trending this year and although I’m not a big trend follower, I do love blue and white.

Instead of trying to beat the winter blues, I decided to embrace this color trend and start refreshing my living room decor with shades of blue right now. However, I couldn’t justify purchasing the high-end blue and white decor options I admired. Therefore, I decided to look for budget-friendly options to get the look for less. I’ve been sharing some DIY ideas to create boutique-worthy blue decor for a fraction of the high-end versions. So, let me show you how it all came together for a cozy blue living room update.

Budget-Friendly Front Door Refresh

One of the first refreshing ideas I noticed was the breezy blue and white window treatments and rugs available at the Kravet + Pottery Barns collaboration this season. For 1/4 the cost, I replaced the window treatments at our French doors with this lovely pattern and added a washable new rug to match. The budget-friendly alternative led to refreshing the entry table and desk area next to the front doors.

Entry Area Refresh

I recently shared the Ballard Design-inspired entry table refresh. It includes several thrift store ginger jars and vase makeovers using either paint or napkin decoupage. Plus, a ginger jar lamp update complete with a DIY pleated fabric shade.

You will see a thrifted shelf next to my desk on the other side of the front doors. The shelf contains architectural salvage, old books, and updated thrift store candleholders. The antique etching above the shelf is a recent thrifted find, and the DIY primitive heart door hanger adds a touch of romance to the entry area.

New Pillow Covers For Living Room Decor Ideas

One of the least expensive ways to update and refresh a room is by adding pillow covers and throw blankets in the current color trends. I was once again drawn to many of the pillows featured in the Kravet-Pottery Barn lookbook. However, luckily I was able to find equally lovely pillow covers for much less.

The neutral sofa is quickly updated with the latest colors in throw blankets and inexpensive pillow covers. The hobnail Ballard Design-inspired lamp was a cheap thrift store makeover that allowed me to get the look for less. Even the side table is one of my favorite furniture transformations.

Insider Tip

Don’t waste money purchasing expensive pillow with down fillers each season. Instead, invest in good pillow fillers once and then each season replace the pillow covers only.

Decide what size pillows work best on your sofas and chairs and purchase good quality down pillow fillers in those sizes. Most all pillows are available in standard sizes, and you can inexpensively update each season for a fraction of the cost of purchasing new pillows with the fillers.

In addition, you will save on valuable storage space when the season changes.

Living Room Decor Ideas for Coffee Table

The coffee table is the main attraction in our open living room. Therefore, the centerpiece needs to look good from any angle. I recently added this DIY moss and paperwhite arrangement using a thrifted glass vase. I added a few napkin decoupage decorative balls and a stack of books to add some refreshing blue and white touches.

To complete the living room decor ideas, I added vintage brass candlestick holders filled with battery-operated tapered candles and a couple of sweet little birds perched on the stack of books.

Side Table Decor

The side tables are areas where you can add more touches of blue to the living room. The glass cloche is filled with vintage books, an architectural element, and a small lamb. While the thrift store’s updated tray is filled with a vignette of thrifted finds, including a blue and white napkin decoupage ginger jar and an LED cordless lamp.

Winter Blue Mantel

Since I’ve only had a mantel in the living room for a short time, I still love changing the look seasonally. Earlier, I added the DIY Moss Heart Topiaries for Valentine’s Day. I used blue and white containers so that they would blend with the updated blue living room ideas.

The shabby chic mantel adds a rustic feel to the farmhouse living room with the DIY Old Book Page Heart Garland and rustic dough bowl.

In addition, the rustic dough bowl is filled with moss spheres and gold figs for a bright touch on the mantel.

In Conclusion

When you style your home with neutral colors, it’s easy and inexpensive to update with the latest colors. Living room decor doesn’t have to be expensive. Even when you are drawn to the high-end designer styles, with a bit of creativity, you can get the look for less.

With an open floor plan, allowing your color choices to spill over to the other open rooms within your space is important. I’ll share more about the dining room and kitchen updates over the next few weeks. In addition, the bedroom is also in the process of being updated.

Spoiler Alert: Sneak Peek

The kitchen update is coming along quickly, and I thought I’d share a sneak peek of the new island color. Surprise, surprise, it’s blue. Do you remember the previous color? I was ready for an update, and it’s so refreshing. Stay tuned for the full reveal.
