When shopping at Dollar Tree, I’m always on the lookout for items that can be upcycled to achieve a high-end decor look. When I found these glass candle holders, they didn’t hold much of an appeal, but I decided to see if I could update them with a chic and modern Halloween look.

How To Upcycle Dollar Tree Halloween Decor

There are many fun seasonal items at Dollar Tree. Their Halloween decor and craft supplies are inexpensive and therefore, worth the risk of a makeover. Let’s take a look at how I upcycled these glass Halloween Candle Holders.

Supply List

Step 1 – Remove Metal Wire Handles

Since I plan to use spray paint for this Dollar Tree transformation, the first step is to remove the metal wire handles.

Use needle-nose pliers to bend the wire where it is hooked together around the mouth of the candle holder. Loosen the wire just enough for the wire to become unhinged. Set the handles aside.

Step 2 – Spray Paint Dollar Tree Candle Holders

Next, move the Dollar Tree Candle Holders to a well-ventilated area and place them on a stand or box to paint. Begin with a light coat of the Cashew spray paint, covering the entire glass.

Hold the spray paint a good distance from the project to avoid drips and runs. Then continue to build up the coverage until you can no longer see through the glass. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. If you notice any areas that need more paint, apply another coat immediately.

Step 3 – Return Handle To Candle Holders

Once the paint is dry, return the metal handles to the candle holders. Gently wrap the metal around the mouth of the jar, then use the needle-nose pliers to bend the metal back into place.

Step 4 – Paint Eyes, Nose, and Mouth

Now, for the finishing touch, use the small paintbrush and apply a coat of gold leaf paint to the eyes, nose, and mouth of each Dollar Tree Halloween Candle Holder. Depending on your brand of paint, you will likely need 2-3 coats of gold leaf to achieve sufficient coverage.

Step 5 – Add Raffia Bow For Finishing Touch

Finally, to add a finishing touch, I used rustic raffia to wrap the handle and tie a simple bow at the side. You can use any ribbon of your choice to create a decorative bow or leave the handle as is.

How To Use Dollar Tree Halloween Jars

When I first discovered the candle holders, my first thought was to use them to hold napkins at each place setting for a Halloween tablescape. However, there are several ways to utilize these upcycled Halloween jars during the season. Let’s take a look.

Halloween Candleholders

The most obvious use for the candleholders is to add tea lights. I used a battery-operated tea light as a safe alternative.

The Halloween candleholders can be added to a table setting, on a mantel, or on a bookshelf. They help to add an inexpensive touch of fall to any area of your home.

Halloween Napkin Holders

The upcycled Halloween napkin holders also worked out perfectly. I folded the napkins in half and tucked them into the jars for a charming way to display napkins at each place setting.

Halloween Candy Holder / Surprise Gift / Placecard Holder

One of my favorite ideas was to use the jars to hold candy. I used a piece of parchment paper and folded it around some Halloween candy. Then, I tucked it into the jars.

These would make a great gift idea for those special trick-or-treaters in your family or neighborhood.

Great surprise gifts to show you care. Fill them up with homemade goodies for someone convalescing or take a supply to a nursing home as a surprise treat for patients. These inexpensive treat jars are sure to brighten someone’s day.

Then I had another idea: why not use the candy jar as a placecard holder and allow guests to take the Halloween jar filled with candy home as a gift at the end of the evening? I just added the placecard under the wire on the jar and ta-da!

I will be able to use them on my Halloween tablescape when the time comes, but in the meantime, I can add them to my mantel, open shelves, or other fall vignettes. They add just the right touch of Halloween without going overboard.

I hope you enjoyed this easy upcycled Dollar Tree craft.
