DIY Decoupage Seashell on Canvas: Custom Coastal Map Decor
Hey friends, we’re spending some time at our beach cottage, and I’ve decided to decoupage some of our seashells. To give them a personalized feel, I decided to use copies of our beach area’s coastal highway maps and decoupage them onto the inside of the shells. I then mounted the shells on individual canvases. I’m excited for you to see how easily this custom project was completed. I’m sharing step-by-step instructions so that you can duplicate this look for your home decor.

Inspiration For Coastal Highway Map Decoupage
Okay, I’m going to be honest with you. I came to the beach with my shells and some nautical paper napkins, ready to add them to the shells for the seashell canvas art. Then I saw my friend, Wendy, at W.M. Design house decoupaging shells with road maps. I fell in love with Wendy’s creative idea. I immediately switched gears and downloaded some maps of our coastal beach area. The idea of using personalized maps on the shells will make the artwork even more special.
How To Customize Highway Maps For Shell Decoupage
The first thing I did was Google my beach town and maps of the area. Several different options popped up. I then downloaded the maps and printed them. Since the seashells are much smaller than the printed maps, I reduced the size and printed a couple of different sizes to ensure I’d have enough to work with. I also printed two of each size, just in case, since I’d be at the beach and not have access to a printer.

Supply List
- 2 – 5x5x 1.5 inch canvas
- 1 – 5X7x 1.5 inch canvas
- E-6000 Glue
- Antique Gold Rub N Buff
- Folk Art Craft Paint – White, Camel, Teddy Bear Tan
- 2 – Fan or Scalloped Shaped Seashells
- 3 – Oyster Shells
- Command Picture Hanging Strips 10lb.
Determine the Placement of Shells On Canvas
The first step is to determine how you plan to place the shell on the canvas. This will be important in putting the maps on the shells. I placed the shells where I planned to adhere them and then laid the maps on top to see if the placement would work for an attractive display. The three oyster shells were the most difficult to determine. I planned to use the same map on the three shells instead of just one. Once I felt I had a good design, I began to cut the maps to fit the shells.

Paint Inside of Shells If Needed
Before adding the maps to the shells, I painted the inside with white paint. This will cover any dark spots or discolorations inside the shell and prevent them from bleeding through the white areas of the maps.

Paint Canvas
While I waited for the shells to dry, I also painted the canvases. I wanted a soft color but not a stark white. I used a couple of beige shades and mixed them with the white for a white wash appearance. I then set them aside to dry.

Decoupage Map To The Inside of Shells
Once the shells are dry, you are ready to adhere the maps to the insides of the shells.
How To Cut The Map To Fit a Shell
I began by cutting the maps to a size slightly larger than the shells. Then I wrapped the map around the shell and pressed it to the inside, shaping it to the curve of the shell. Then I folded the edges to form a crease around the shell, which provided a clear way to cut the map to size. I placed the cut map back inside the shell to confirm that it will be a good fit. If you notice any overlapping areas, you can quickly cut them out. It’s okay for some of the inside rim of the shells to be visible.

Paint the Inside of the Shell With Mod Podge
Once you have sized the map, you can begin adding the Mod Podge. Using a small brush, I applied a thick coat to the entire inside of the shell. Press the map into the glue and continue to smooth until it feels secure. Then add another heavy coat of Mod Podge over the top of the map. Set the shells aside and allow them to dry.

Add Rub & Buff To Seashells
I wanted to enhance the shells with some gold accents. I used my favorite Rub ‘n Buff to achieve the desired look.
To add the antique gold Rub n Buff, apply a small amount to a paper towel and rub around the edges, allowing a small amount to cover the inside rim of the shells. Then use a small paintbrush to fill in any creases or gaps in the rim of the shells. Finally, paint the back side of the shells with Rub’ n Buff if they will be exposed after being applied to the canvas. The scalloped shells need to be almost completely painted on the backside as they are raised away from the canvas, except at the center.

Adhere Seashells To The Canvas
To adhere the seashells to the canvas, I used E6000 glue. Any strong permanent glue will work. Apply a generous amount of glue to any area of the shell that will be in contact with the canvas. Press the shell in place and secure it to allow for drying. I used a knife to gently lift the edge of the shells, stabilizing them until the glue had dried. The scalloped shells may require a couple of areas of stabilization to keep them from rocking.

Add Gold Edge To Canvas
Finally, to enhance the canvas, I added a small amount of antique gold Rub N Buff to the top edge of each one. I added a drop of Rub’ n Buff to a paper towel and quickly rubbed it around the edge.

How To Hang Decoupage Seashell Art Canvas
First, the wide depth of the canvas will allow your artwork to sit on a shelf or tabletop without the need for hanging. However, if you want to hang your canvas, you can use any method you choose. I decided to use command picture hanging strips for these small canvases. It was easy to add the strips and hang all three canvases evenly. Just follow the instructions on the command package.

Personalized Beach Cottage Seashell Art
I’m thrilled with how the shells turned out. I love that the decoupaged shells depict our beach town and the surrounding area. One of the maps was more involved, and I decided to use three oyster shells to contain the main elements of the map. Another shell features a vintage map of Fort Fisher, located just below our beach cottage.

Where To Hang The Trio of Seashell Canvases
I had initially thought I’d hang the three seashell canvases in a row horizontally. However, as I played around with different areas for them to hang, I decided on a narrow strip between the door and a window.

The vertical option is visually appealing. They are a perfect fit for this narrow strip of wall. Don’t they look charming?

They complement the other coastal decor on the side table at the window, and I’m happy with the location.
I’m so glad that I saw Wendy’s map idea. These seashells are now a treasured part of our beach cottage decor.

I hope you enjoyed today’s DIY idea, and I look forward to sharing more adventures with you.
