10 Easy Late Summer to Early Fall Decorating Ideas
Even though our days are still warm, autumn is just around the corner, and I’m eager to bring those warm, cozy vibes indoors. However, I prefer to take things slowly and gradually introduce seasonal touches.
If you’re ready for a subtle shift, these tips will help you start the transition without having to drag out all your fall storage boxes just yet. Here are my 10 best ideas for decorating between late summer and early fall:
- Warm Textiles: Add warm neutral or earth-toned textiles such as pillows, throw blankets, and bedding.
- Vintage Brass Pieces: Add warmth with brass candlestick holders, bowls, trays, and decorative accessories
- Old Books: Stacks of old books with aged or warm covers added to tables or shelves.
- Candlelight: It’s time to pull out your real or battery-operated candles and add them to your vignettes.
- Harvest Time Fruits & Vegetables: What is being harvested right now? Fill bowls with the real thing or artificial ones.
- Vintage Autumn-Inspired Dishes: Choose combinations of brown, gold, white, or blue dishes such as transferware plates and ironstone pieces.
- Harvest Greenery: Replace summer flower stems with early-harvest greenery.
- Woven & Natural Wood Textures: Pull out baskets, demi johns, aged wooden bowls, breadboards, and trays.
- Old Bottles or Glassware: Add amber or gold glassware, bottles, or plates.
- Nature’s Bounty: Start gathering pinecones, acorns, dried grasses, and stems.
Warm Textiles For Cozy Early Fall Decorating
Now is the perfect time to pull out your textured throw blankets, pillows, and bedding. Use neutral or earth-tone colors to create a cozy atmosphere in your living areas and bedrooms.
The neutral vintage crocheted afghans and a DIY candlewick pillow create a cozy reading corner in our loft.

Brighten With Vintage Brass Pieces
Brass instantly adds a warm glow to your home. I love to collect vintage brass candlestick holders, bowls, and trays.
Below, I’ve combined candlestick holders with a thrifted brass bowl filled with architectural salvage and dried hydrangeas.

Thrifted and Vintage Books
I have a large collection of old books that I’ve found at thrift stores over the years. I rotate my collection based on the season. In the early fall, I begin to pull out the tattered and earthy-looking books.
Below, I’ve gathered a few random books to display on our entry table for late summer or early fall. They are combined with the vintage brass pieces to complete the entry table vignette.

Candlelight For Cozy Decorating
Whether you prefer a scented candle or battery-operated flicker candles, adding candlelight to your vignettes instantly creates a warm, cozy feeling. I love to light my candles in the evening, especially as the days begin to shorten.

Harvest Fruits & Vegetables For Easy Decor
One of the easiest ways to transition from summer to fall is to fill bowls with seasonal fruits and vegetables. Whether you use real or faux, they give your countertops a touch of the season.

Vintage Autumn-Inspired Dishes
I love collecting vintage dishes, so I have several collections and many random plates. I love to mix and match my tableware, but another way to decorate with your one-of-a-kind pieces is to create a plate gallery wall.
This wall has a vintage gathering basket as the focal point, but is surrounded by dishes in autumn colors. Both the plates and the basket are perfect for transitioning from summer to fall.

I also couldn’t wait to begin setting the dining room table with these warm dishes and glassware. This year, I chose to mix browns, ambers, and blues to create a late-summer table. The apple adds a touch of fall harvest to the place setting.

Add Harvest Greenery
I’m not ready to pull out all the wheat and corn husks just yet, but using some faux harvest greenery will add a warm and cozy feel without feeling premature in your fall decorating.
When I found these gorgeous fig stems, I knew they would be perfect for early fall in my kitchen. I decided to use them to fill my wide-mouth demi john. Mixed with my other demi johns, some DIY crochet doilies, a thrifted lamb, and a vintage cheese board as a riser, they create a stunning kitchen island centerpiece.

Woven Basket and Natural Wood Pieces
I use my vintage baskets, wooden breadboards, bowls, and trays year-round. However, as fall approaches, I bring them front and center in my decorating.
I placed a vintage gathering basket next to my entry table to hold textured linens and pillows.

Next, I filled the DIY plate rack in the dining area with layers of vintage breadboards, cutting boards, and platters for early fall decorating.

Decorating for Early Fall With Vintage Amber Bottles
I just recently shared some fall decorating ideas using vintage amber bottles, and I’ve already added a few to my coffee table this year.
I layered the bottles on top of a large vintage breadboard and mixed in some candles, gold decorative fruit, and autumn stems. This is a simple budget-friendly vignette centerpiece that continues to work into fall.

Late Summer to Fall Decorating with Nature’s Bounty
Lastly, don’t forget to look to nature for late summer to early fall decorations. I love gathering pinecones, acorns, dried pods, and nuts to add to bowls, vases, and other containers.

I placed dried okra pods and a single pinecone under a glass cloche with old book pages for a simple display on our sofa table. In another area, a vintage wooden bowl was filled with gathered pinecones and battery-operated flicker candles for safe but cozy decor.

Design Challenge
Today’s post is part of our monthly Design Challenge hosted by Cindy at County Road 407. This month, late summer to early fall decorating inspiration comes from Heidi at Eleanor Rose Home.

I used many of Heidi’s design elements on my entry table, including the antique mirror, vintage dresser, old books, brass candlestick holders with candles, and a basket with comfy blankets. To complete my design, I included a lamp and a brass bowl filled with architectural elements and dried hydrangeas. My recent DIY Wood Slice Pumpkin Wreath adds another touch of autumn to the corner space.
