Thrifting in Wilmington NC: Secondhand Shopping Guide
We’ve had a beach cottage at Kure Beach for over 30 years. When we want to shop, we are fortunate that Wilmington is only 20 minutes away. I have spent many hours thrifting in Wilmington, NC. I thought you might like to know where I’ve shopped and where to find the best vintage second-hand shops. This is a complete guide to vintage and thrift store shopping in the Wilmington, NC area. In addition, I’ll share my thoughts on the shops I’ve visited.

Wilmington, NC
Have you ever visited Wilmington, NC? It’s such a wonderful holiday destination. Foodies and vintage lovers will not be disappointed.
What do you like to do while on vacation? Some of my favorite things can be found in this historic coastal town that I’m fortunate enough to vacation in on a regular basis.

Since we own a tiny beach cottage that’s only 20 minutes away, we take advantage of all that Wilmington has to offer.
Historic Wilmington, North Carolina
Our proximity to fine dining, sightseeing, and shopping has always been a great perk of our beach retreat’s location.
When we tire of the sun and waves, we are only a short drive from a bustling city.
Wilmington’s 2-mile Riverwalk hosts many great shops & restaurants with outdoor dining and perfect views of the historic Cape Fear River and the Battleship North Carolina, which is open for tours.

You can also walk along the cobblestone streets and view many historical homes that have been carefully preserved. To learn more about the preservation efforts, you can read this article.
A visit here during the annual Azalea Festival is an amazing sight.

The port city of Wilmington has a little something for everyone, thanks to its proximity to Wrightsville Beach, Carolina, and Kure Beach. In addition, you are only minutes from Fort Fisher Civil War Museum and the North Carolina Aquarium. As a side note, my daughter’s wedding was held at the aquarium, and it was a magical under-the-sea experience.
If that’s not enticing enough, you can catch a 20-minute ferry ride to neighboring Southport, NC on the Fort Fisher Ferry.

Shopping in Wilmington, North Carolina
You can enjoy many shops in the Wilmington area, including many consignment and second-hand shops. Next, a shopping break? You can enjoy a culinary delight at the many wonderful restaurants. We have a hard time choosing where to eat because we have so many favorites. I’ll share a brief list with you at the end of this article.

Vintage Thrift Stores
In addition to all the wonderful historic sights, beaches, and restaurants, Wilmington and the surrounding area are filled with vintage thrift stores. I’ve been thrifting here for years and still have a “must visit” list that I’ve not been able to get to yet.
Today, I’m going to share the shops I have visited and the items I’ve purchased. Then I’ll share a few from my “must-visit” list.
Where are the best deals and finds?
I want to begin today’s guide with one statement. “You can’t determine which vintage and resale shops have the best deals because of their ever-changing inventory.” All the shops I’ve visited have something to offer, and I’ve not been to any that didn’t have something I would love to take home. The key to successful thrift store shopping is to visit often. Prices vary from shop to shop and from vendor to vendor. You just never know when you’ll find the deal you are looking for. It’s always a treasure hunt. See more thrift store shopping tips here.
Vintage Market Place – Oleander Drive
You may remember these vintage ceiling tiles that grace our front doors. My first visit to Vintage Market Place was while we were searching for architectural elements to add to our farmhouse. The farmhouse was under construction, and we were on a mission to find vintage items to give the new construction the character of a much older farmhouse.

That day, we met the owner, Janey, and left with vintage ceiling tiles salvaged from an old furniture store in Wilmington.

Since that faithful day, my car doesn’t pass by Janey’s shop without pulling in to see what treasures have been added. If you follow along on my Thrifting with the Gals stories, you have seen many videos from Vintage Market Place.

The Ivy Cottage – Market Street
Another must-stop shop is The Ivy Cottage, which is actually 3 separate consignment buildings conveniently located beside one of our favorite restaurants, Indochine.

One of my favorite purchases here was the French Champagne Crate, which we transformed into a coffee table for our newly renovated beach cottage.
You can see more of the thrifted finds on last month’s Thrifted Coastal Farmhouse Decor on a Budget.

We also shopped here while our farmhouse was under construction and found the second sideboard that makes up our DIY Kitchen Island.

I rarely leave this shop without adding something to my collections.

Primrose Cottage – College Road
Primrose Cottage is a combination consignment and vendor shop and is located at Monkey Junction on College Road. This shop is very convenient to me, and I pass by it almost every trip into Wilmington. It has quickly become a favorite for great deals. I personally have found the best deals on the consignment side of the shop. Here are a few of my more recent purchases.

Legacy Architectural Salvage – Dawson Street
Legacy Salvage, a non-profit project of the Historic Wilmington Foundation, is a great source for reclaimed wood, windows, doors, and more.
The wooden top we made for our Champagne crate coffee table was rescued from their great supply of reclaimed wood. We also picked up these slate roofing tiles for our outdoor bar in Asheboro.

P.A.W.’s Resale Shoppe – Carolina Beach Road
Another non-profit thrift store I love to visit is P.A.W’s Resale Shoppe. I have found some great deals in this shop located close to Monkey Junction on Carolina Beach Road. The store is part of Rosie’s Rescue, and all profits benefit local rescue and animal shelters. “Our mission is support local shelters, rescue orgs & members of the community by raising money through the sale of donated goods to help rescues & shelters with supplies & treatments, and life-saving surgeries.”
From a shopping standpoint, the shelves are very organized, and it’s easy to spot what you are looking for. In addition, they offer a large supply of pet supplies.

One of my favorite purchases from P.A.W.’s is this painted wooden container with a lid, which I used to create this year’s Christmas table centerpiece.

Rescue Mission of Cape Fear, Castle Street
Rescue Mission is a non-profit work-based shelter for homeless men with a wonderful second-hand shop full of great deals. I’ve missed them on some trips because of their hours. However, I’ve loved all my purchases and will be checking back often. I found both of these silver pieces on one visit.

There are many other non-profit thrift stores where I have found great deals.
- Habitat Restore, Carolina Beach Road, Market Street, & 3rd Street
- Salvation Army Thrift Store, Floral Parkway
- Assistance League Thrift Shop, Eastwood Road
Fleabody’s Antique Mall – Market Street
Another fun stop just down the road from Indochine is Fleabody’s. They have an ever-changing inventory, which makes it a great place to walk off our lunch and pick up some great vintage deals. They offer a great selection of repurposed furniture and paint supplies.

The Village – Recollections Vintage Village – Carolina Beach Road
A little closer to our beach cottage is The Village. This is a multi-unit consignment shop I stop by often, always finding a few treasures to bring home, such as this shell planter and the adorable vintage dishes.

Azalea’s Antiques & Art – 23rd Street
I love visiting Azalea’s Antique Mall. The shop has something for everyone, from primitive vendors to high-end merchandise. They also have some very interesting vendors that seem to cater to the Wilmington-area movie studios. I’ve seen fun vintage clothing and memorabilia that could be used as props for movies or TV shows. So it’s fun to walk around and explore.
This cute marble-and-brass lamp is my last find here.

Spruced – Independence Blvd.
Another fun spot that has a constantly rotating inventory is Spruced. The shop is smaller but has fun vendors. I’ve purchased several items from new merchandise to vintage. Here are two of my favorites. I use the gold and acrylic cutlery all the time, and this handcrafted basket vase has been seen in every area of the farmhouse and greenhouse.

Baker Street Curiosity Shop – Market Street
You never know what you might find in Baker Street Curiosity Shop. The shop is filled with antique furniture and vintage goodies. I’ve visited several times and always find a deal.
Orange Blossoms – Merchants Circle, Hampstead
Just outside of Wilmington is the Orange Blossoms resale shop. I’ve only visited once, but found some great deals, so I will be sure to check back often when I’m in the area. I’ve used the Homer Laughlin Pink dishes on several occasions. I purchased a complete set for a steal.

The Junky Monkey- N. Kerr Avenue
A recent thrifting with the gals adventure took us to the outskirts of Wilmington to visit The Junky Monkey!
We all brought home several great deals. You might remember seeing my haul on Dirt Road Adventures that week. I’ve already found a use for every item.

Favorite Restaurants In Wilmington, NC – Grab a Bite While Thrifting
I rarely have a thrifting adventure without including a meal. Even after a few shops, I’m ready for a break and a delicious meal. It’s part of the adventure. There are so many great restaurants in the area, and I know I’ll forget some of our favorites, but here’s a short list if you’re in the area.
- Indochine – Market Street and its sister restaurant, Cafe Chinois, on College Road, are both filled with atmosphere and delicious food. A must-visit experience.

- J Michael’s Philly Deli – Great for a quick lunch break, with several locations in Wilmington and the best Philly Cheesesteak salad.
- Butcher & Barrel – Greenfield Street – yummy but a little pricey.
- Brasserie du Soieil – Eastwood Road – if you find yourself shopping at or close to Lumina Station, this restaurant is a must.
- Henry’s – Independence Blvd. – Great classic restaurant with good atmosphere and a varied menu. Lunch specials.
- Molly Pitcher’s American Grill – Wrightsville Avenue – Great casual dining with daily specials – Mondays are half-price hamburgers, and you’ll have plenty of energy after eating one of these.

Rachel it is always a good day when you talk about thrift stores ! Here in the mountains of WNC in Franklin my local non-profit humane society ( Appalachian Animal Rescue Center ) has a awesome store ! This society will celebrate our 60th year in business this fall. All proceeds go to the operation of our no-kill shelter . I am so proud to have been volunteering for 26 years for this animal rescue group. I sometimes will print off some of your ideas and post them so others can get some ideas. Thank you for so much !!
Sharon,
That is wonderful. Itโs great to contribute to such a great cause.

Thank you. I will on my next trip.
I see a lot of thrift stores on your list, but mine is not on your list! We are right next-door to the village. It’s called PAWS ReSale Shoppe and it’s a nonprofit thrift store that benefits, local rescue organizations, shelters, and members of the community that need assistance with their pets for life-saving Treatments and surgeries. We don’t sell clothing but we do have handbags and home decor and a huge pet section. Please come check us out! 5941 Carolina Beach Rd.
