Why Decorate With Antique Milk Glass for Christmas?
The neutral color of antique milk glass makes it stylish for any decorating season. However, mixing the opaque white pieces with traditional colors of red and green creates a timeless, elegant feel to your home.
But the good news is neutral, gold, blue, and pink also work harmoniously with vintage milk glass. Whether you collect vintage or antique milk glass, pull it out of the cabinet because it all looks amazing with Christmas decorations.
Deck The Halls With White Milk Glass To Brighten Your Home For the Holidays
The opaque white of milk glass helps to add bright spots to your home. We all have those dark corners, tops of high cabinets, or little-seen lower shelves that get little attention. However, add a white milk glass vase, and suddenly, the eye will be drawn to those areas of your home.
Thrifting with the Gals
Today’s post is part of our monthly series, Thrifting with the Gals.
If you are new to our series, we are friends who share a love for vintage and thrifted decorating.
We all live in different parts of the country, but we come together once a month to share thrift store shopping ideas and how to decorate with your treasures.
Here are the Gals:
- Ann from Dabbling and Decorating finds her treasures as she travels between Vermont and Maine. She decorates both homes with so many vintage treasures.
- Kristin from White Arrows Home loves thrifting in Minnesota and adds some of her finds to her vintage store.
- Robyn from Robyn’s French Nest loves to travel and bring her vintage treasure to her lovely Florida Home.
- I am from North Carolina, and I love filling my farmhouse and beach cottage with thrift store finds. I focus on budget-friendly decorating and DIY projects.
We are excited to have Kelly from The Tattered Pew with us this month. I can’t wait for you to see her thrifting adventures.
Decorating with Vintage Milk Glass For A Festive Christmas Table Setting
A favorite pastime is scouring thrift stores for unexpected finds. Vintage milk glass has recently gained popularity, and I’ve been lucky to find some great deals.
Today’s festive Christmas table is layered with a mix of new and vintage tableware finds.
You will see five creative ways to decorate with milk glass on the Christmas dining table. I know you will want to rush to the thrift stores to find some treasures.
Collecting Milk Glass Compotes
The first idea for decorating a festive Christmas table was to use the milk glass compotes at each place setting. The white milk glass makes the red and green accessories pop on the table.
The compote bowl rests on a thrifted red and white plate and is filled with fresh rosemary and a vintage shiny brite red ornament.
Many recent thrift store finds help to brighten the tablescape. They include silver goblets, vintage red water glasses, white napkins, and red placemats.
Cake Stands
Another favorite collection is vintage cake stands. They add an elegant addition for serving your holiday cakes and pies. However, you can use them creatively to decorate your Christmas table.
Use as risers to elevate a centerpiece, to hold beverages, and to hold additional table decorations.
Milk Glass Bud Vases
Add a few milk glass bud vases filled with greenery and red berries, turning everyday vases into something exceptional. They help to balance the silver candelabra that serves as the table’s centerpiece.
The Christmas Farmhouse decor ideas include an evergreen table runner with foraged pinecones and additional red ornaments.
Flower Vases and Pedestal Bowls
In addition to the bud vases, larger milk glass vases and pedestal bowls are excellent for creating centerpieces with evergreens or berries. However, today’s vases and bowls hold small Christmas trees.
One is placed on a cake stand and surrounded by a cedar candle ring wreath. The pedestal bowl serves as decoration behind the table with another mini tree.
The festive milk glass-inspired table will get your guests into the Christmas spirit.
Farmhouse Christmas Bedroom Decor with Antique Milk Glass
Next, add antique milk glass to your farmhouse Christmas bedroom decor to create a warm and cozy feel.
Add a few vases filled with greenery to a dresser, cabinet, side table, or shelf for instant holiday charm.
The vintage milk glass candleholders are so versatile. In this position, they are holding pillar flicker candles, but flip them over, and they will hold tapered candlesticks.
DIY Hobnail Milk Glass Ornaments
This year, I was inspired to make some Hobnail milk glass ornaments to decorate the bedroom.
You can quickly create fun ornaments to compliment your milk glass collection with simple and inexpensive Dollar Tree supplies.
See Easy DIY Hobnail Christmas Ornaments for the full tutorial.
Bedside Tables
Each bedside table has a milk glass vase filled with Christmas greenery. The hobnail vase was a lucky find for only $2.00.
The Christmas farmhouse decor ideas include this festive holiday bedding with berries and birds. You can see all the holiday bedding and more at Shop My Bedroom.
Hanging Bud Vases
Think outside the box when decorating with milk glass bud vases. Group several together to create centerpieces and fill a few with flowers or stems.
Fill the vases on an old shutter with bottle brush trees and berries.
Vintage Milk glass has a timeless appeal that enhances Christmas Farmhouse Decor ideas, as well as cottage, traditional, and modern decor. I encourage you to gather your collected pieces and decorate with these 10-holiday ideas.

Milk glass is nice & it matches everything bc it is white. I used to have a lot of it many yrs. ago, but I had no hutch to store it in & I had children. So it was a lot of work constantly having to clean them after sitting out, although I did use some, others just sat empty. Eventually I had to move bc the rent went up & I had to get rid of some extra nic nacks & things I was not really using or causing clutter in order to keep. So the Milk Glass had to go. It wasn't worth anything in the 80s when I had it, but I think it is now. I really don't miss having to clean it, I have my Tea Pot, Cups & Saucers to clean, plus some other things. It's enough, now that I'm in my 60s.

@Karen Howard, I am 85 as of Thanksgiving day this year, and don't mind dusting etc. I have 2 acres that I mow and weedeat and do some plumbing if necessary. Electrical I don't do. Love life and like you, had many pieces of mild glass and due to a smaller house, gave so much away. But, with Hometalk I have found so many wonderful things to do and experiment with. Just made many bells using plastic water bottles and cups and if looking through my stash of things, can find something interesting. HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Karen, Yes, it's had to know what to hang onto and what to get rid of. At least you were able to keep some of your treasures.
