How To Remove Wrinkles Without An Iron
We’ve all had it happen. You’re rushing to get dressed and realize that your shirt is wrinkled. What can you do to quickly get rid of the wrinkles without pulling out the iron? Here are a few tips and tricks that will save you time.
1. Add Clothing To the Dryer With a Damp Cloth
One common problem I have with clothing that is dried flat or hung to dry is the wrinkles. I like to use this solution before I’m ready to get dressed, but sometimes I wait until the last minute. If you’re home and pressed for time, dampen a washcloth and throw the wrinkled garment and cloth into the dryer on high. It should only take a few minutes to remove the wrinkles.
Below you can see wrinkled pants that were hung to dry, then added to the dryer with a damp cloth. See the smooth results after just 3 minutes on high.
2. Ice Cubes In The Dryer
Another way to remove wrinkles using the dryer is to add a few ice cubes and set the heat on high. This is essentially the same result as the damp washcloth, as the ice cubes melt and create steam to help remove wrinkles. I find this method works best if you have several articles of clothing. Otherwise, the damp cloth method works great.
4. Hang By The Shower
If you are traveling or notice the wrinkles before showering, hang the article of clothing by the shower and let the steam do the work. Ensure the clothing is placed far enough away from the water spray to avoid getting drenched. This method works great for lightly wrinkled garments.
5. Hair Dryer
Another creative solution for removing wrinkles, whether at home or on the go, is to use your hair dryer. You can dampen the area with water and dry it with the hair dryer.
6. Hair Styling Flat Iron
Many times, clothing will have a few wrinkles around the collar or sleeves. When dealing with small areas, you can use a flat iron or curling iron to smooth the wrinkles.

7. Wrinkle Release Spray
My go-to trick is using wrinkle-release spray. It’s quick and easy, and here are a few ways I use it.

- Many times, I spray the wrinkled garment heavily with wrinkle-release and toss it in the dryer for a few minutes.
- I dampen the wrinkles with spray and get dressed before drying my hair. By the time my hair is dry, the damp wrinkles have released and dried. If I’m not drying my hair, I still use the hair dryer to dry the damp clothing.
- When only certain areas of the garment need smoothing, I use wrinkle release to dampen the wrinkles. Then I lay it flat and smooth the wrinkled areas with my hands.

How To Make DIY Wrinkle Release Spray
If you prefer to make your wrinkle-release spray, it’s easy to do so. Here is what you will need.
- A spray bottle
- Water
- Liquid Fabric Softener
Mix a 50/50 solution of water and fabric softener in a spray bottle. Shake well to mix.
8. Dampen Washcloth
When traveling and there’s no clothes dryer in sight, you can dampen a washcloth and squeeze as much excess water from the cloth as possible. Then, simply rub the cloth over the wrinkled areas and smooth them out with your hands.
9. Steamer
You can also use a steamer to smooth wrinkles if one is available.
How To Prevent Wrinkled Clothing
The best tip to prevent having to iron clothing is to prevent it from becoming wrinkled in the first place. Here are some tips and tricks to avoid wrinkles.
Prevent Wrinkles With Washing & Drying Tips
When washing and drying clothing that tends to wrinkle easily, here are a few tips that will reduce wrinkling.
- Don’t overload the washer
- Wash clothing on a gentle cycle
- Use dryer sheets or wool dryer balls when drying clothing.
- Remove the clothing from the dryer immediately and hang or fold it.
- If clothing needs to dry flat or hang to dry. Remove the clothing from the washer immediately, shake it to remove as many wrinkles as possible, and smooth it with your hands. Another tip, depending on the fabric and care instructions, is to toss it into the dryer for a few minutes. Just long enough to remove wrinkles, then lay flat or hang.

Closet Tricks To Avoid Wrinkles
Even if you follow all the washing and drying tips, wrinkles can reappear in clothing that hangs in your closet for days. That’s usually the one that causes you to run late. You know it was smooth when you placed it in the closet, but once removed, it’s full of wrinkles. Here are some tricks to help avoid closet wrinkles.
- Don’t overstuff your closet. Give clothing that wrinkles easily some space. If space is limited, group items that rarely wrinkle and pack them in tightly. This will make more space for items that wrinkle easily.
- Hang slacks on clip hangers instead of folding over a hanger rod.
- Fold sweaters and place them on a shelf to prevent hanger marks on shoulders.
- Button blouses and shirts from the top down. This will prevent the collars from drooping and help to keep the front of the shirt smooth.
- When hanging garments with sleeves, smooth the sleeves with your hands and then slide the hangers together.
- Use non-slip hangers to ensure that clothing hangs evenly and remains in place, preventing wrinkles.

In Conclusion
We all lead busy lifestyles, and ironing can be a time-consuming task. These tips and tricks for avoiding the ironing board have worked with most fabrics. I try to avoid fabrics that wrinkle excessively, but when all else fails, you may need to resort to using the iron.
