DIY Dollar Tree Patriotic Decor: Easy Porch Basket Wreath

Can you believe it’s time to pull out our patriotic decor? Memorial Day is just around the corner, and the 4th of July will be here before we blink an eye. I just recently scanned the Dollar Tree aisles for red, white, and blue decor and found some great deals. I am adding these inexpensive supplies to two DIY basket wreaths for my front porch. I can’t wait to show you how easy it was to put together, and it’s so darn cute. Let me show you the details.

Hanging Basket Wreath

I’ve had two hanging baskets for several year and I use them seasonally to decorate beside my front doors. The baskets have a welcome sign on the front but can be turned with the blank side facing forward, making them very versatile. The baskets are deep and for this project, I need to add some filler so that the patriotic decor doesn’t disappear. I used recycled plastic grocery bags to fill the space. Because the basket weave is loose, I used some craft paper to cover the bags so the white didn’t show through.

I purchased eight Dollar Tree red flower stems which was perfect for one of the baskets. However, I need to fill two baskets. I debated purchasing more flowers but decided to recycle some old stems instead. The larger flowers are similar to red sunflowers and each stem has three large blooms.

I added the large blooms to the center of the hanging basket wreath and bent the blooms forward. Then I filled in around the large flowers with the smaller Dollar Tree stems and some faux boxwood greenery I had on hand. You’ll want to continue to shape the flowers until you are happy with the design. Now it’s time to prepare the Dollar Tree star ornaments so they can be added to the arrangement.

Dollar Tree Metal Star Ornaments

To add a patriotic touch to the basket wreaths, I purchased several of the metal star ornaments. They come in red, white and blue and have beads to match. To prepare them to use in the basket arrangement, here’s what I did.

  • First, I cut the metal ring from the stars with wire snips.

  • Next, I painted the wooden bamboo skewers with craft paint to match the stars.
  • Finally, I added the stars to the skewers with hot glue and allowed them to dry.

After all the stars are dry, I added a drop of hot glue to the end of the skewer and arrangement two of each color in and amongst the flowers.

How To Make A Beaded Star Garland

I originally thought I’d add a Dollar Tree bunting to the front of the basket arrangement. However, after it was filled with flowers and stars, the bunting was too much! Instead, I decided to take the red, white, and blue beads from the ornaments and make a beaded garland. There were two white stars left over so I added them to the center of the garland.

Since I had some red and white bakers twine on hand, I used it to string the beads. Using a large needle, I added beads on either side of the white metal star. Then I tied the ends of the twine onto the rope handle of the basket wreath, allowing the star to hang at the center of the basket.

DIY Patriotic Basket Wreath

What a fun and easy project. By repurposing and recycling materials, I was able to make two patriotic basket wreaths for less than $20.00.

The baskets hang on the DIY Door shutters on either side of our front doors and brighten the front porch with a fun patriotic style.

Instead of using the Dollar Tree patriotic bunting on the basket wreaths, I added it to the front of the planters. The low maintenance faux boxwood shrubs fill the DIY faux galvanized planters for a second year.

The front porch is ready for the Memorial Day holiday and will continue to look great for the 4th of July.

  1. Rachel,
When citing sources for your projects, please give alternate suggestions for upcycling or making various items – i.e. many of us are retired or beginning DIYers and cannot afford a $42 basket to put DT decorations in. Perhaps you could show us how to decorate a cardboard box or gift bag as the container instead of the basket. Sometimes we don’t have time to shop for thrifted items which may cost less, either.
Thanks for sharing the project. I love patriotic decor.

    1. Barbara,
Thank you for these suggestions. This gives me some ideas for the future. I’m glad you like this idea and I can easily see this arrangement in a recycled box that is painted red or blue. I will give some thought to using recycled boxes for some other projects. I hope you have a blessed weekend.

  2. This is a really nice-looking patriotic project. I think I will make a burlap cone and place flowers into that container instead of the baskets, unless I can find similar, affordable baskets. Thanks for this inspiration.
