How To Choose a Heart Wreath Frame

There are many options for heart wreath frames. I decided to use a grapevine frame because I had it on hand. However, you may have another type, and I’ll share some options and how to prepare them to make attaching the pinecone flowers easier.

You can also choose from different-sized wreaths. The one I used was 10 inches.

What Is Best To Cover The Wreath Frame

The best material for covering the wreath frame will depend upon desired style your are going for. I used the grapevine heart frame and feel that if you see the grapevine peeking through, it will only add to the rustic shabby chic design.

However the wire and styrofoam frames are less than desirable. Depending on the color you plan to paint your flowers, you can use the fabric that is similar in color. Just cut the fabric into strips and wrap it around the frames for full coverage. Secure with hot glue.

Another option is to use a cording or twine. Wrap in the same manner until the frame is covered.

I nestled the pinecone flowers close together on the frame. If you want to spread the flowers out along the frame, you can use hot glue to cover the frame with reindeer or spanish moss. You will still want to cover with fabric or twine first so that the moss will adhere easily. Follow with the pinecone flowers and you’ll have a stunning wreath.

How To Prepare The Pinecones

You will want to gather several pinecones and use garden pruning shears to cut them into smaller pieces. The number of pinecones needed will depend on the size of your heart frame. Since my wreath was small, I used only 6 smaller oblong pinecones for this project.

Cut Pinecones Easily

Use sharp garden pruning shears and cut each pinecone into pieces that are approximately 1/2 to 1 inch thick. If you are using larger pinecones, you may need heavy duty lopers to cut through the tough core. You will loose some of the scales while cutting. I set those aside incase I need them while assembling the wreath.

Trim and shape each of the pinecone flowers. Remove any scales that are loose and shape the flowers by cutting away anything that doesn’t look like a flower.

How To Paint The Pinecone Flowers

Once the pinecones are cut into smaller pieces, they resemble small flowers. I painted the petals in three colors to create this shabby-chic Valentine’s Day door decoration. Ensure you paint each pinecone scale with the paint. Use a small brush to get between the scales. I left the centers brown.

I painted an equal number of pinecones in each color. I also painted the smaller pieces with the same colors to use as filler between the larger flowers.

How To Attach Pinecone Flowers To Heart Wreath Frame

Adding the pinecone flowers to the heart wreath frame is very simple. Just add hot glue to the backside of the pinecones and hold them to the wreath until the glue sets.

The heavy floral wire will help to hold them in place if you position it where the pinecones will be attached. I find that the glue adheres easier to the wrapped wire and therefore the pinecones are more secure.

Arrange the flowers by mixing the colors and sizes around the heart frame. Fill the frame completely with the pinecone flowers.

FAQ

You can use almost any type of paint you have on hand. I used simple acrylic craft paint but chalk paint would also look good. The shabby chic appearance is enhanced when the paint appears distressed so you don’t have to worry about 100% coverage.

The best way is to use sharp garden shears or heavy-duty wire cutters. Don’t try to cut the pieces smaller than 1/2 to 1 inch. The smaller the pieces, the more likely they will fall apart. The scales are held together by a woody core, so as long as you leave a bit of that core intact, your “flower” will stay together!

Yes! You want to ensure that there are not critters living in the scales. First clean by brushing any debris and then either freeze or bake the pinecones to kill any remaining bugs. See Foraging Safety Guide Tips for more options

If you are storing your pinecone flower heart wreath, to ensure it looks good next season, wrap the wreath in bubble wrap or packing paper so the pinecones don’t get crushed. Store in an airtight container and add silica packets if the storage area isn’t climate controlled.

If you find that you still have gaps between the pinecone flowers, you can use some of the loose scales that will fall from the pinecones when you are cutting them. Just paint them to match the color of the flower next to the area that needs filling. Then use hot glue to add the scale. Add as many as you desire.

If the gaps are larger, you can fill with reindeer or spanish moss. Add some hot glue to the area and press the moss in between the flowers.
