Creative Decorating with Vintage Doors and Windows For Farmhouse Charm
Adding authentic farmhouse charm to a new build can feel challenging, but for me, the perfect solution was repurposing vintage doors and old windows. In addition to installing old doors, we creatively decorated with several vintage windows to give our home a unique, aged style. I’m excited to share exactly how decorating with vintage doors and windows created the illusion of an old farmhouse in our new build, and how you can do it too!

Decorating with Vintage Windows
Adding vintage windows to your home decor adds a touch of nostalgia and rustic charm. You can hang them on the wall or prop them on a shelf as vintage art. Let’s take a look at all the ways you can use old windows around your home.
Repurposed Antique Window
One of the first windows we added to the farmhouse was this repurposed old window. Since it was now a mirror, it was perfect to add over the vanity in our guest bathroom. The original chippy paint added to the room’s rustic feel.

Vintage Window Gallery Wall
I wasn’t sure how I’d decorate our staircase wall. However, when I realized that an air exchange vent would be located front and center, I knew we had to find a way to disguise it. An old window with chicken wire added proved to be the perfect solution. A few more collected windows and architectural pieces help to complete the gallery wall.

Although this window was missing all the glass, it’s been perfect for displaying seasonal wreaths or other decor.

Add Vintage Windows to Cabinet Tops or Shelves
If you don’t have wall space for displaying vintage windows, they make great backdrops on the top of cabinets or shelves. This chippy window was rescued from a garbage bin. This provides a strong backdrop for the vintage bottles in this china cabinet.

Outdoor Decorating With Old Windows
An old stained glass church window has been repurposed as a wall planter on our workshop wall.

While a trio of old windows decorates the top of my potting bench.

When we replaced the old windows in our beach cottage, we brought them home, and Brad built this outdoor kitchen cabinet with them. You can see all the details at How To Build A Shabby Chic Kitchen Cabinet With Reclaimed Windows.

Creative Decorating with Vintage Doors
While our farmhouse was under construction, we began the search for antique and vintage doors to create the illusion of an authentic old farmhouse in our new build. We were fortunate to have some doors gifted to us and lucked up with some great finds.
Repurposed Antique Doors in Farmhouse
One of the first doors we found was this unique European antique. Our builder converted it into a sliding barn door for the entrance to our primary bedroom.

Another great find was the repurposed old screen door someone found along the roadside. It still has its original chippy paint, but the screen has been replaced with a chalkboard and a magnetic metal board. It has been repurposed as our pantry door.

Our builder retrofitted other antique doors to create an authentic, old-fashioned farmhouse feel throughout the home. This small door fits the space at the end of the hall, creating a coat closet.

This gifted antique door serves as the entry to our attic crawl space.

Adding Farmhouse Charm With Unique Old Door Ideas
I’ve been known to collect old cabinet doors and use them as wall art. This primitive cabinet door in our guest bathroom is ideal for displaying seasonal wreaths to brighten the space.

Another old cabinet door was repurposed for this DIY bathroom cabinet.

Large Old Door Project: DIY Greenhouse
When we were planning to build a greenhouse, I originally planned to use old windows. However, as luck would have it, some amazing reclaimed French doors fell in my lap. The plan changed, and we are very happy with how the DIY greenhouse turned out. You can see more details at How We Built A DIY Greenhouse Without Any Experience.

Authentic Vintage Door Knobs
In addition to all the vintage doors inside the farmhouse, all the doorknobs are vintage as well. Some of the doors came with them attached; for the ones that didn’t, we searched until we found replacements that worked.

We used a combination of glass and white porcelain door knobs. Even the locks are authentic antiques.

Thank you for stopping by, and I look forward to sharing my next adventures with you.

* * * Good Morning Rachel * * *
Love vintage windows and doors. Just think of the tales they could tell.
Have a Blessed Day.
Lots of Hugs from my family to yours.
🙂 Kathleen 🙂
Kathleen,
I agree about the stories they could tell. Several of our old doors are from an 1800 farmhouse that was being torn down. Each door is unique and I’d love to know what the small ones were for. Thank you for following along and have a blessed and Merry Christmas!
You have more old windows and doors than any person I know and I’m totally jealous! I remember the post about how you covered the vent up the stairs and thought it was genius. I have the ugliest doorbell in the middle of the wall in our entry and need to do something similar but it sticks out about 5 inches! Ugh.
Love this post and all its wonderful ideas. pinned
Cindy,
You are so sweet and I appreciate your encouragement so much. Have a blessed Christmas!
