Pinterest Challenge

Today’s post is part of our monthly Pinterest Challenge series hosted by Cindy at County Road 407. This month, inspiration comes from my good friend Michele at Vintage Home Designs. See all the inspiration ideas linked at the end of today’s article.

Fall Elements

When participating in the Pinterest Challenge, I begin by determining the key elements in the inspiration image. Then I use as many of those elements as possible in my interpretation of the style. Here are the elements I was able to gather for today’s Fall Mantel Decorations.

  • Deconstructed Thrifted Books
  • Transferware Dishes and Fall-Inspired Plates
  • Thrifted mirrors
  • Foraged Pinecones

Repurposed Mantel Shelf

Since the challenge was to decorate either a shelf or mantel for fall, I decided to use our repurposed mantel that we made into a shelf over our bed. It’s a great spot to add seasonal decor.

Thrifted Fall Transferware Dishes

Fall inspired and brown transferware dishes were the first items I pulled from my vintage thrift store finds. Instead of adding the dishes to the shelf, I hung them on the wall below. I previously had blue and white dishes here so it was easy to just switch them out with fall dishes.

Deconstructed Books For Fall Decorating

I have several old thrifted books that I deconstructed a few years ago. They are great for a rustic and neutral decorating style. Here I’ve added a few to the Fall mantel decorations.

Thrifted Mirrors

Adding mirrors helps to draw attention to the mantel decorations. They also help to reflect light and brighten the space.

I used two thrifted mirrors in different sizes to enhance the fall decorations.

Foraged Pinecones for Fall Decorating

Michele also included a bowl of gathered pinecones. Since we have an abundance for the taking, I filled a small vintage tureen with some that I foraged.

Additional Budget-Friendly Fall Elements

To complete my fall mantel shelf decorations, I added several additional budget-friendly fall elements.

  • Transferware Vintage Pitchers
  • Late Summer Fresh Garden Flowers
  • Vintage Brass Candlesticks
  • Thrifted Fall Art

Transferware Vintage Pitchers

Instead of using transferware dishes on the shelf, I added some of my favorite vintage transferware pitchers. I’ve collected several while thrifting. I filling the pitchers with seasonal flowers. I used another stack of deconstructed old books from the inspiration photo as a riser.

Late Summer Fresh Garden Flowers

Since I have not unboxed my fall decor, I gathered some of my late summer garden flowers. I felt the black eyed susans mixed with lilac colored crepe myrtles be perfect for an early fall shelf decoration.

Vintage Brass Candlestick Holders

I love collecting and decorating with vintage brass candlestick holders. Even those that are tranished add light and curated interest to any fall vignette.

Thrifted Art For Fall Decorating

I also love collecting vintage and thrifted art. Since I had previously had a rectangle platter mixed with the round plates above the bed, I decided to use a vintage painting in it’s place. I love how the plate and art gallery came together.

Decorating Around The Shelf

In addition to the repurposed mantel shelf fall decor, I wanted to add a touch of fall to the surrounding areas. Therefore, I collected more garden flowers and filled my thrifted milk glass vases with the lovely blooms.

In addition, I added a thrifted basket as a bed tray to complete the fall decorations.

Budget Fall Decorating Ideas For A Repurposed Mantel Shelf

The repurposed mantel was updated for fall using free and thrifted materials, so I didn’t spend any money on this month’s Challenge.
