What To Do After Christmas?
Decorating for Christmas is my absolute favorite, but after Christmas might be my least favorite. Once Christmas is over, we have the daunting task of storing Christmas decorations and ornaments. The house suddenly feels very depressing and blah! But it doesn’t have to be.
It will be less depressing if you take the time to tackle these projects for after-Christmas organizing and decluttering. I’m sharing one of my best tips for storage of Christmas Ornaments, ideas for decluttering, and what to leave out for Winter decorating. Since we are spending a few days at our beach cottage, I just finished using these tips, and they made things go exceptionally smoothly.
In addition, I’ve included 11 other bloggers’ tips and ideas to give you several options.

Don’t Store These Winter Decorations Yet!
First, it’s important to decide what decoration you will leave in your home for the winter months. I have several “Christmas” decorations that will work just as well for winter and keep the house from feeling bare.
First, here are some tips to determine what to store and what to leave out.
- Faux and Real Evergreens are great for winter decorating. Store them away if they are heavily accented with Christmas ornaments, glitter, etc.
- Plain pinecones, and ones with faux snow work well for winter.
- Snowflakes, snowmen, lanterns, and holiday villages can all be good winter decor, provided they don’t include heavy Christmas decorations.
Here are some projects and decorations I didn’t add to my Christmas storage bins. I’ll gradually add them to storage as February moves into March.
Evergreens For Winter Decorating
Each year, I make a new, fresh Magnolia leaf wreath for my holiday decorating. The good news is it usually stays in the farmhouse for months. I will remove the gold metal bow and place the wreath in another location for winter decorating. The leaves are already fading and curling but it still looks amazing and will help to keep the house warm and cozy for winter.

Just because Christmas is over doesn’t mean you can’t continue to add fresh greenery to your home. Fill vases, planters, and baskets with magnolia, pine, cedar, and holly to fill in the gaps left by the removal of your Christmas decorations. I also like to leave a few of my small, bare trees to fill planters and dark corners.
In addition to evergreen trees, I like to leave my wooden shiplap tree on the screened porch. In years past, I would immediately store it away, but then I realized it looks adorable filled with Spring decor. This year, I plan to remove the angel, add a birdhouse to the top, and keep the red birds and bird nests on the branches. I’ll fill the branches in the spring with other birds and flowers like last year.
Brad built the reclaimed shiplap tree on our first Christmas in the farmhouse. You can create a wooden tree even if you don’t have reclaimed wood. I share all the details on How To Build A Wooden Christmas Tree.
Pinecones
One of my favorite projects of 2024 was the Pinecone Christmas Trees Centerpiece. I plan to leave the centerpiece for my winter decor just by changing some surrounding decorations.
You can make a pinecone centerpiece with this easy-to-follow tutorial.
Another idea is to fill baskets with pinecones or mix them with evergreens.
Winter Village
I have two sets of winter houses. One is rustic and made with old book pages and twigs. When I remove the bottle brush trees, it will look great for winter. My other houses are more specifically Christmas decor so I’ll store them until next year.
