Vintage Brooch Pillow Wraps: No-Sew Unique Pillow Makeovers

Hey friends, I’m excited to share a unique way for you to add a little sparkle to your existing plain pillows. I was inspired to pull out all my vintage brooch pins after finding a red, white, and blue scarf at the thrift store. I thought it would be an easy, no-sew way to add a patriotic touch to one of my plain throw pillows, and an old brooch added the finishing touch. Those vintage brooches were all begging to come out of hiding, so I began using other fabrics for quick and unique pillow makeovers. Let me show you how easy it is to update your old pillows.

Vintage Brooch Pillow Wrap Inspiration

I purchased this red, white, and blue scarf for $3.00 at a thrift store. I immediately thought it would make a stunning patriotic pillow wrap for one of my plain pillows. Then I remembered that I had several vintage brooches that I had inherited from my aunt, which were begging to get out of hiding.

To add the scarf, I just gathered the fabric, wrapped it around the plain pillow, and tied it in the back. Then I placed the pin at the center of the pillow to give it a retro style. I also experimented with a crystal brooch for added sparkle, like fireworks at the 4th of July.

No-Sew Scrap Fabric Pillow Wraps

After the success of the patriotic pillow cover, I gathered some of my scrap fabrics to create more pillow wraps. Here is how I prepared the fabrics to make the no-sew wraps.

Step 1 – Cut Fabric

My pillow is 20 x 20, so I used one yard of fabric to make the pillow wrap and cut the strip approximately 9 inches wide. The length can vary depending on the size of your pillow. You just need enough fabric to overlap in the back. I cut the edges of the fabric with pinking shears to prevent it from unraveling. Then I folded the fabric under on the edges and gathered it to wrap around the pillow cover.

Step 2 – Secure The Fabric Wrap To The Pillow

To secure the fabric on the back side of the pillow, tie in a knot and secure with a safety pin. Tuck the safety pin under the fabric.

Insider Tip

If you prefer to make a fabric wrap that can be easily removed from the pillow, you can use permanent fabric glue and velcro attached to the two ends of the fabric. You will need to gather the fabric before adding the glue and allow glue to dry before adding the wrap to the pillow.

I used a safety pin because it was easier to secure and when I’m finished with the cover, the fabric can be used for other projects.

These simple wraps can be used vertically or horizontally to update plain pillows. The fabric alone adds a great deal of character to the pillows, but can be further enhanced with the addition of a brooch.

Step 3 – Add Vintage Brooches To Pillow Wraps

To add an extra spark to the pillow wraps, it’s easy to add a vintage brooch. Simply gather the fabric at the center of the pillow and run the pin through it to secure.

The fun vintage green flower brooch looks stunning mixed with the floral green pillow. However, if you prefer a more dramatic pillow wrap, consider using a contrasting color, such as this pink flower brooch.

Where to Find Vintage Brooches

If you don’t have a collection of vintage brooches, you may want to start one. They are reasonably priced at flea markets and thrift stores. I personally like the mid-century pins, and you can pick them up for just a few bucks. Some more ornate brooches can come with a hefty price tag. Check resale shops and charitable donation centers for the best deals.

Matching Pillow Wrap

I recently used some fabric to update a lampshade for the bedroom. Since I had some of the fabric left over, I decided to make a pillow wrap to match it. The bedding is neutral, and the fabric with the crystal brooch creates a fun and interesting addition to the bedding.

Alternative Ways To Use Brooches On Pillows

Another fun way to use vintage brooches on pillows is to create a flower with fabric. Just use a needle and thread to gather the fabric into a circle. Add a brooch to the center and pin it to a pillow for a decorative touch.

Consider covering the front of a pillow with a collection of brooches. The Christmas tree pins look festive on a velvet green pillow for the holidays.

Ribbon Pillow Wrap Ideas

Another way to easily add a wrap to a pillow is to use a wide ribbon. This ladybug ribbon looks adorable on a porch pillow for summer.

You can also make a ribbon bow and attach a flower brooch to the center to accent a lumbar pillow—such a cute way to update a plain pillow for indoors or out.
