Pottery Barn Terra Cotta Leaf Tray For Fall

The minute I saw the new Pottery Barn Terra Cotta Leaf Tray, I decided I could make one for a fraction of the cost. So I snapped a screenshot and gathered my supplies. When I went back to study the tray, it was already out of stock. I was so glad I had my image to work with. This was an easy project; aside from drying time, it only took a few minutes to make. Here are the supplies I used.

Leaf Template

I created this leaf template that I used for my tray; however, you can use a real leaf or create your own design. There is no right or wrong leaf shape.

Print a copy of this leaf pattern to make your tray. Then cut the design with scissors.

I used this exact size for my tray, but you can enlarge or reduce the pattern if you choose.

Step One – Prepare Air Dry Clay

First, I protected my table surface with wax paper. I’ve also used a smooth cutting board to work with air-dry clay. I gathered a good amount of air-dry clay and kneaded it into a smooth ball. Then I used the rolling pin to flatten the clay until I had an area large enough for the leaf template. I underestimated the amount of clay I’d need, so I had to start over and add more. Once I had enough clay, I had a flat surface approximately 1/4 inch thick to create my version of the leaf tray.

Step 2 – Cut Leaf Template From Clay

Next, I laid the paper leaf template on the air-dry clay and used the exacto knife to cut around the edges of the leaf. I removed excess clay and stored it in an airtight container for future projects.

I then used the knife to trim and shape the leaf. If you have any rough edges, dampen your fingers with water and rub over the area to smooth.

Step 3 – Shape and Allow To Dry

To allow your leaf design to dry, you will need to find a smooth, round bowl or bottle to shape the air-dry clay around. I used a round bottle, but I’ve used a metal bowl in the past. Anything smooth on the surface will allow the clay to dry into a bowl shape.

Carefully, drape the clay leaf over the bottle and set aside to dry. Because the clay is thick, it may take several days to dry. Avoid rushing the drying process, as the clay can crack if exposed to the sun or oven. Keep in a dry, well-ventilated area that can be left undisturbed.

After the clay was somewhat dry, I turned the bowl over to help speed up the drying time. I ensured that it would sit evenly on a table. Since it is still damp, you can adjust the shape if needed. It is shaping up beautifully.

Once it’s completely dry, you can smooth any rough edges with a light grit sandpaper if needed.

Step 4 – Paint Pottery Barn Inspired Leaf Tray

Once the clay is completely dry, it’s time to paint your Pottery Barn-inspired Leaf Tray! I began with the terra cotta color craft paint and covered both the front and back of the tray.

The Pottery Barn Tray has a mottled appearance, so I used a combination of the Toasted Terra Cotta and Teddy Bear Tan paint to duplicate the look. Once the paint was dry, I sprayed the front and back with a light coat of Clear Matte sealer to protect the finish.
