What Colors Create The Feel Of A Coastal Home?
Once again, we look to nature when considering decor colors that evoke the feel of a coastal home. Soft sand colors, such as white, tan, beige, and grey, are the perfect backdrop, allowing you to add more natural coastal colors. With a neutral color palette, you can add any color palette you prefer, but natural beach colors of watery blues and sea greens will look right at home.
When adding metals, consider the warm colors of nautical brass and copper.

What is Coastal Decor?
When planning a coastal vibe, consider a casual, cozy, and simple approach to living. Slipcovered chairs, sisal rugs, and soft sandy colors all help to create a relaxed coastal feel.

First, to achieve this vibe, we look to natural elements. These five elements will give your home a subtle beach-like feel.
- Seashells
- Driftwood
- Sand
- Rope
- Rattan
Additionally, these decor choices create a perfect coastal ambiance.
- Coastal Lighting
- Books
- Art
- Nautical Decor
Seashells Not Just For The Seashore
You can instantly create a coastal feel in your home by filling a container or glass cloche with collected seashells.

You can also consider making shell craft projects for budget-friendly coastal decorating ideas. I recently added a DIY oyster shell and cork garland, along with an oyster shell wreath, to the pegboard accent wall in our cottage living room. They are both easy craft projects that anyone can make.

I just added these DIY custom decoupaged seashells. By downloading highway maps for your area, you can create personalized shell art canvases that add so much charm to your beach cottage or any home.

In addition to decorating with shells in the beach cottage, I love to display collected seashells under a cloche in the farmhouse. You can fill a basket, tray, or cloche with shells, driftwood, coastal books, and more for an instant, treasured feel.

Driftwood Wood For Coastal Ambience
An inexpensive way to add coastal ambience is to incorporate driftwood. This thrifted glass vase is filled with small driftwood pieces to hold bare branches, creating instant coastal decorations.

Another piece of driftwood is hung as an art piece above the kitchen island. The napkin decoupage of oyster shells adds a personalized decorative touch to the plain piece of driftwood.

Sandy Feet and Collected Sand Decor
Another free way to add a touch of the sea is using sand from the beach. One of my favorite projects for the beach cottage was these easy Pottery Barn-inspired candleholders. Once I made the glass candleholders, I gathered some free sand from the beach and added battery-operated pillar candles.

Nautical Rope Decor
Another DIY project that adds a nautical touch to the beach cottage is this DIY nautical mirror with rope details.

Trending Rattan for a Coastal Vibe
To update our built-in storage units in the cottage bedroom, we add an easy DIY rattan project to the door and drawer fronts.

You can add small touches of rattan like this decorative box.

More Cozy Coastal Accents
Here are additional cozy coastal accents to make any home have a beachy summer feel.
Coastal Lighting
For a cozy home feel, adding soft light is essential in a coastal-inspired home. There are so many lamp options with a nautical coastal feel, and most work well in any home.

Drawing inspiration from natural coastal elements, this hanging rope light fixture is. The fixture isn’t hardwired; however, we’ve added a smart remote light switch, allowing us to easily switch it on and off without moving furniture.

Coastal Inspired Books
Another great and easy way to add coastal charm to your home decor is to add a stack of coastal books.
I love incorporating books of all types into my decor, and these coastal-themed coffee table books add a lovely touch to the blown glass vase.

In addition, a great coastal read is this classic book by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. I read it at least once a year and get new insights into the season of my life each time.

Coastal Decor Ideas
Filling your walls and shelves with pieces of coastal art is another way to create a warm and cozy atmosphere in your home. You can make a seaside vibe with images of shorelines, coastal wildlife, ships, and more.
You can elevate the value of any object, such as this wood-carved sea turtle, with a glass cloche.

Coffee Table Decor
In addition to cloches, you can create a coastal decoration by filling a bowl with shells, ornaments, driftwood, etc. I added nautical-inspired beads and a starfish to this thrifted woven tray, along with a beach-themed coffee table book featuring a dried star floral arrangement.

A thrifted planter is filled with faux greenery to complete the vignette.

DIY Accent Wall
The DIY accent wall, featuring a pegboard shelf and lower bench, is a focal point of the living room and, therefore, a perfect spot to add art and other coastal decor.
The accent wall with a pegboard shelf features a vintage, rusted door stop in the shape of a pirate ship. A repurposed champagne crate serves as a coffee table under the sofa.

Coastal Art
Adding original artwork, whether large or small, will set the tone and add interest to coastal decor.

Nautical Bedroom Decor
The small bedroom has limited display space, but the shelf above the bed is filled with beach-inspired decor. The oblong dough bowl is filled with sea coral, a fishing net, and a DIY buoy garland.

Beach Cottage Kitchen Decor
To add a nautical feel to the beach cottage kitchen, we added a DIY pegboard shelf and filled it with sea-inspired decor. The kitchen cupboard holds blue and white dishes and nautical serving pieces.

I hope you find these tips helpful in adding coastal decor to your home.
