How To Create a Rosemary Tree Base
I decided to use some old wooden thread spools as the base for my DIY rosemary trees. The spools are small, and I didn’t think they were sturdy enough to hold the trees upright. So I added a wooden washer to the bottom of each spool with hot glue.
There are other options for the tree base. Here are a few suggestions.
- A wooden block with a hole drilled in the center.
- Small wooden tree slice.
- A small clay pot with styrofoam.
- Use a vintage tea cup with styrofoam.

Next, I used a small dowel rod to attach the rosemary stems. I added the rod to the hole in the thread spool with hot glue.
You could use a gathered twig for this part if you choose.

How To Attach Rosemary Stems
Once you have your base made, you can begin attaching the rosemary stems. I cut two lengths of stems. The longest length was 5,” and I began attaching them approximately halfway up the dowel rod with hot glue. Ensure that the tips are facing downward as you apply.

Then I continued adding hot glue and stems around the dowel rod. Be sure to nestle the stems close together as you go around the rod.

Once you have the first row filled, begin adding a second row of rosemary stems cut approximately 4″ long, and allowing them to overlap the first row.

Continue to fill the dowel rod with stems and sprigs of rosemary until you reach the top of the rod. Then add some sprigs to create a tree topper, applying them with the tips facing upward.
Look for any gaps and fill with additional stems until the tree looks full.

Insider Tip
When filling in any gaps, apply the hot glue directly to the stem top and nestle it in close to the dowel rod.
Finally, I added a green velvet bow to the top of each tree.

I tied the bow and used a twist tie to wrap it around the tree top.

Decorating Your Kitchen With Mini Rosemary Trees
I love using the fresh mini rosemary trees to decorate the kitchen. They add a refreshing scent and are an adorable addition to kitchen countertops, window sills, and island vignettes.

The mini-rosemary trees are the perfect size for the kitchen island cheese board vignette. They take only minutes to assemble, are practically free to make, and yet they add such charm to the kitchen.

If placed in an area away from the sun and direct heat, they will continue to look fresh for several weeks. Just don’t touch them. LOL.

I hope you enjoyed this simple, fresh herb idea, and I look forward to sharing more adventures with you soon.

Rachel, these mini rosemary Christmas trees are just so cute! I love those wooden spools that you used for the base of the tree. I have saved all my old wooden spools in a bag just in case I could use them for something one day! Now, you have given me such a wonderful idea! Now I just have to buy some rosemary at the grocery store. Keeping you in our prayers! So glad that you are feeling better, Rachel. Your home looks so beautiful with all your Christmas touches.
