Y’all, I’m so excited to share my latest thrifted treasure. You know that I love vintage baskets, and I recently found a stunning handcrafted oversized basket that I couldn’t resist. I immediately saw the large basket on my coffee table or kitchen island filled with flowers and plants. Let me show you how easy it is to transform this large basket into a stunning planter centerpiece for a coffee table or a rustic, gathered centerpiece for a kitchen island.

The Thrifted Basket Treasure

I find it hard to resist a good vintage basket. I found this one at a flea market-style thrift store and fell in love with the size and patina. I knew it would be perfect for my coffee table, kitchen island, and so many more locations around the farmhouse.

How To Prepare a Basket For Centerpiece Ideas

Depending on your choice of decor to fill your basket, you may need to add some filler. This basket is deep, and some of my decor wanted to sink out of sight. Therefore, I used some packing paper that I received in some packages. I tore the packing material into small sections and balled it up. This allowed me to move the pieces as needed to create height in certain areas of the basket.

Idea 1 – Rustic Kitchen Island Centerpiece

I love using oversized containers on the kitchen island. It’s large enough to accommodate a substantial vignette. With a display of copper pots on a textured brick wall, the vintage basket feels right at home.

Gathered Vintage Basket Fillers

When I decided to create a kitchen island centerpiece, I drew inspiration from my collection of breadboards and vintage rolling pins to fill the oversized basket. Then, I continued to add items such as an ironstone pitcher filled with vintage kitchen tools and a faux basil plant to complete the vignette.

Vintage Basket Arrangement

First, I added the breadboards to the back side of the basket and then began to fill in with the larger rolling pins. I also added some thrifted old kitchen utensils, an ironstone pitcher filled with wooden spoons and copper cookie cutters, and a faux basil plant.

To complete the island vignette, I used vintage brass candlestick holders and a couple of demijohns. A tea towel with a tiny copper kettle, a dough bowl, and a small cutting board complete the display.

Insider Tip

If you are looking to create a kitchen centerpiece vignette, first shop your home. If you need additional items, shop the kitchenware section of thrift stores. Small kitchen tools are usually inexpensive. You may want one or two investment pieces like authentic vintage breadboards or cutting boards.

Idea 2 – Fresh Greenery Filled Coffee Table Display

One of my initial ideas for the vintage basket was to incorporate greenery as a focal point in the oversized basket, creating a planter. I decided the arrangement needed a little color, so I included some faux roses. You can also use fresh flowers if you prefer.

Basket Filler Ideas

The first items I decided to add to the basket were two greenery house plants. However, their small size created a need for more filler. I have the gorgeous faux roses, and I gather them into a large tin can so they will stand tall in the basket. To give the basket a rustic touch, I added some chippy white spindles and a concrete white acorn that helped to fill any gaps in the arrangement.

I began with the large tin can filled with faux roses. Then I placed the two live greenery plants around the flowers. Next, I added the concrete acorn, the large spindles, and then the small spindles to fill in any gaps.

The coffee table vignette was completed with coffee table books and two different-sized candles to add a variety of heights.

Idea 3 – Faux Floral Explosion Coffee Table Centerpiece

For a third idea, I decided to use all faux flowers and greenery. This centerpiece will continue to look great all summer and until late fall.

Faux Flower Ideas

I have several stems of faux anemones that will add a burst of color to the basket. A couple of stems of running ivy make a great base for the flowers to rest upon.

I began with the running ivy surrounding the outside rim of the basket. I allow the ends of the ivy to spill out from the edges. Then I added the faux anemones individually to the arrangement. Tucking each one in amongst the ivy until the arrangement was full.

The bright color of the anemones makes the coffee table so cheerful. I love like real they look as they spill from the basket.

Final Ideas For Collecting Vintage Baskets

I have a large collection of baskets, most of which are handmade. I love the unique designs and shapes of handcrafted artisan baskets. I have many that I hang in the greenhouse and rotate them around the farmhouse for different occasions.

They are great for holding books and magazines, adding faux and real flowers to create an arrangement, or alone to add texture to a space. To see more ideas, check out How To Decorate With Vintage Baskets in Modern Farmhouse.

Best Places To Shop For Vintage Baskets

Here is where I have found my best deals on old baskets.

  • Thrift Stores
  • Consignment Shops
  • Yard Sales
  • Flea Markets
  • Antique Malls
  • Estate Sales

Insider Tip

Don’t look for prefection when shopping for baskets. Many of mine lean to one side and some has broken reed. You may be able to get a better deal if there is slight damage. If you like for your decor to look perfect, just turn the damaged area away from view. Place the basket on top of cabinets or cubboard so that the damage isn’t visible.
