Decorative Pillows

This is not my first project using scrap fabrics to make decorative pillows. You may remember my spring pillow, shown here. This same design can be used with fall colors so I wanted to give you this link to that tutorial if you like it better.

Variations on Decorative Pillows for Fall

My inspiration for this pillow came from the zinnias that are still standing in my flower garden. They are few and far between. In addition, they are turning brown and fading fast.

apply fabric to pillow cover using permanent glue.

How to Make Decorative Pillows for Fall

First, you need to protect your pillow cover by placing a piece of card board or plastic inside the cover to keep the glue from adhering the two sides together.

Add protective barrier inside the pillow cover.

Next draw your design on the pillow cover with a sharpie pen. I used a brown sharpie for this project since it is Decorative Pillows for Fall.

You can use green or black, depending on the look your want for your design.

You can also draw a template, as I did for the spring pillow above. See how I did that here.

For this fall pillow design, I just drew lines straight up from the bottom of the pillow cover and added circles to the tops. In addition, I added a few leaves to the stems.

Draw design on pillow cover.

The fabric strips are short pieces, in fall colors, torn from clothing and previous projects.

Apply glue to the circles and twist your fabric strips as you attach them to the glue.

For the leaves, I used a thick green fabric and cut angles off the strips and attached them flat to the pillow cover. I didn’t try to twist that fabric.

Just be creative with your colors and designs. My favorite thing about this project is, the flowers don’t need to appear perfect. A little ragged and faded looks best.

I used a piece of jute twine that accidentally got mixed in with my scraps and I couldn’t resist adding it. It was meant to be used on this pillow.

I really liked your fall pillow--and I smiled when I read about your zinnias. Mine (here in Maine) are worse than raggedty altho they still haven't been hit by frost! I loved looking at all the textures in your living room. It looked like a very welcoming, comfortable room!
