Before

Cut wooden trim pieces to attach over existing drawers.  Measure each drawer to determine what sizes will be needed. 

Sand Edges of trim pieces 

Sand edges of each trim piece until smooth using a belt / disk sander.  Round the edges slightly.

Next, stain each piece.

Stain the new wood trim pieces with a stain color as close to the existing cabinet stain as possible. This will help the pieces to match.

Allow to dry

Allow stained trim pieces to dry completely before moving to the next step.

Paint Trim Pieces

Paint the trim pieces with your desired color. I used old white chalk paint for this project.  I also used a mix of clear and dark wax to age the paint.

Fill any holes & damaged areas with wood filler.  Then paint the cabinet to match trim pieces.  Use the same wax combination on the outside and top of the thrifted chest.  

Attach Trim Pieces

Using wood glue and small tacks, attach trim pieces to the front of the cabinets. Then use a small drill bit to make pilot holes for the new hardware.

Attach new hardware to trim pieces.  More details and resources are available.  

After - Now the boring cabinet looks like a vintage card catalog.
