I love changing my decor seasonally but I can feel lost when starting to make a plan for the coming season. I have fall decor stored away, but I can’t remember what’s there. In addition, I like to have a new plan each year because I don’t like styling the same way from year to year. So here are some tips I follow that help me to focus and pull together a new fall style while saving money and still using items I have from previous years.
As a followup to my last post, today I’m sharing my Best Ideas for Fall Decorating. When you start with a neutral color palette or a blank canvas, you have a world of possibilities when choosing your seasonal colors. Regardless of your color palette, you will learn how to plan your fall decor, use creative decorating tips and save money at the same time.
A blank canvas for Fall decorating
My first and most important tip or idea is to start with a blank canvas. I personally can’t see through all the clutter. LOL. This begins by clearing away all the previous seasons decor and packing it away for next year. In addition, you may want to purge items you don’t plan to use again. Once your slate is clean, you will be able to see clearly and therefore will be more creative.

example of a Blank Canvas
When you have a neutral backdrop and a blank canvas you have so many options to change your decor for fall. In these photo’s, you can see how my friend Toni at Toni Marianna changes the focal point of her living room seasonally.
First is a perfect late summer mantel with summer flowers and those feather paintings are gorgeous. Later in the Fall, Toni adds a harvest basket surrounded by pumpkins, fall leaves & candles. Both are stunning and her space looks completely unique either way.
Group Collectibles & Seasonal items
My second Idea for Fall Decorating is to group your items for more impact. This can include a variety of seasonal items such as pumpkins, candles, bottles, baskets, bowls, etc. Here I’ve gathered a collection of pumpkins together for a fall center piece. If each of these pumpkins were spread around the room, they would have less impact.

Some other ideas that may help you group collectibles. You can gather similar candlesticks together and add fall colored candles as a table centerpiece. If you have a collection of clear glass vases or bottles, fill a couple of them with fall stems and gather them all together on a tray. A collection of bowls can be stacked and then filled with pine cones for a lovely fall display.
Here is a collection of vintage amber bottles gathered to create a charming fall vignette. When grouping bottles of this nature, don’t add stems to every bottle. Instead, pick one or two to add stems and leave the other bottles empty for a more relaxed and less contrived vignette.
Gather from Nature for Fall Decorating
Another great Idea for Fall Decorating is to gather from nature. Dried flowers, corn stalks and pumpkins are just a few of the things that make perfect fall decor. You can also find a lot of free decor in natures bounty. See my 10 Tips for Free Fall Decorating Here.
Add Fall Pillows and Linens
Another idea to bring fall decor into your home is to change out your pillows, throws and linens. Adding new pillows can be expensive but you really only need one fall pillow to mix with your existing pillows when they are from a neutral color palette. Also, pillow cover’s are a great option for saving money.
My friend Cindi at The Mustard See 205 has the cutest neutral guest bedroom. I’m always excited to see how she changes the decor in this space seasonally.
Let’s take a look at the changes Cindi made for Fall. She added a couple of cozy throw blankets, a fall pillow, a few pumpkins and some fall stems. In addition, she added some texture with a basket and the amber bottle filled stems. Notice that most of Cindi’s room is still neutral but regardless, she created a warm and cozy fall vibe with just a few changes.
In addition to bedroom linens, another great idea for fall decorating is to change out your bath towels seasonally. You may only need one or two accent towels in a fun fall color.
Best Ideas for Decorating outside
We have a lot of outdoor spaces and the more free and natural the decor is the better. I could easily go broke trying to decorate all of these spaces. I also, move decor around as needed. If I’m entertaining in one area of the house or property, I may grab some decor from an area that isn’t being used.
If you are like me, you probably have items stored away from last fall. Maybe you’re saying to yourself, “I don’t want to use those same colors”. Maybe you’d like to use one of the color trends for Fall 2020. Well, before you run out and buy all new items, how about re-purposing what you already have. Paint is so much less expensive than all new decor.
If you have plastic pumpkins, plate charger’s candlesticks, pine cones, and even some floral stems, you can transform them into the fall decor color of your choice. I have pumpkins that have been white, then blue and most likely will be copper this year. LOL
DIY Projects for autumn Decorating
Another one of my best idea’s for fall decorating, will save you money and will add interest to your home. When you a make projects yourself, it’s fun, creative and much cheaper than purchasing at the store. It’s also fun to involve your kids or grandchildren in these projects. Here are just a few things you can begin to work on now.
- Dry Flowers by hanging them by their stems. If you have a garden full of flower’s this is a great free DIY . You can use the dried flowers in arrangements this fall. Follow the same instructions as these herb drying instructions.
- Make a wild grapevine wreath. If you have grapevine growing in the woods or know someone who does, this is a great way to make your own wreaths. Here is a link to my tutorial.
- Press Fall Leaves to make art. Here is a link for how to press herbs and pressing leaves work the same way.
One last thing I’d like to remind you about. When planning your seasonal decor, always be true to yourself. Regardless of the trends, we don’t have to follow them. If you plan your Fall Decorating around a natural harvest theme, you can’t go wrong. And most of all, be sure to have fun planning and decorating this Fall.
