Y’all I added a DIY plate rack to our wall last Spring and I love it. Decorating seasonally is so much fun and provides great storage for some of my dishes and other collectibles.

First, this is what my wall looked like last year. I wanted to build a plate rack here from the beginning but could not settle on a design. The options are limitless.

How to Decorate A DIY Plate Rack

I love seeing plate racks with a single row of plates displayed evenly across the shelves. The minimalistic approach is very appealing. However, y’all know I love to layer many pieces, and my plate rack would need some depth.

I also love to display platters, breadboards, and other collectibles, and the plate rack is the perfect spot for such a display.

Because I’m a more is less kind of girl, you can see that I like to keep adding to my plate rack. I hope it doesn’t fall off the wall. LOL

However, when planning your plate rack, be sure to take into consideration your personal style and preferences.

Start Decorating

When planning your plate rack, begin with your favorite pieces.

Here, I used some of the breadboards in varying shapes and sizes.

Next, I added my ironstone platters and plates along with my collection of milk glass vases.

Stack platters and plates with larger ones at the back, gradually building until smaller ones are at the rack’s front.

Using a variety of shapes and sizes will make your plate rack display more interesting. Here you can see square, rectangle, round, and oval pieces mixed together.

Adding a variety of materials and textures is another way to add visual interest. I used a combination of ironstone, wood, copper, milk glass, and metals, all on the same rack.

Add Seasonal Interest

Using similar-colored dishes will make the plate rack look more cohesive. I prefer using white ironstone most of the time.

It’s easy to add seasonal touches with a simple stem to a bud vase or small ironstone pitcher. I added wooden spoons and vintage metal utensils to the pitcher and vases for this neutral style.

In addition to the plate rack, I added a wooden rod to hang additional items.

I’ve recently become obsessed with copper, and it’s a perfect material for displaying my growing collection.

One of my favorite finds is these S hooks for hanging things around the house. I have three sets of them. LOL
